OverviewWe are seeking a Multi-Function Information Systems Engineer who will be responsible for the end-to-end design, development, integration, deployment, and sustainment of complex systems that include both software and hardware/infrastructure components. You will interface across multiple layers—from user-facing applications, system infrastructure and networking. You will apply systems engineering principles throughout the lifecycle (requirements, architecture, integration, verification & validation, sustainment). This position resides in the Support Services & Isolated Environments group in the Research Computing division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
This team supports the ORNL’s goals through robust systems engineering, integration, and support tailored specifically for our NSS research community. We manage a variety of critical infrastructures including mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other pivotal services.
Major Duties/Responsibilities- Systems Administration:
- Manage, configure, and maintain Windows server environments.
- Monitor and optimize system performance, ensuring uptime and reliability.
- Perform regular system updates, patches, and backups.
- STIG checking and systems compliance.
- Implement and support Citrix virtualized environments.
- Manage storage solutions relevant to Windows environments, ensuring data integrity and availability.
- Security & Compliance:
- Implement and maintain security best practices.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and standards.
- Customer Service & Support:
- Provide advanced support and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to resolve technical issues and provide recommendations for system improvements.
- Deliver high-quality customer service, both internally and externally.
- Project Management & Documentation:
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all system configurations, processes, and procedures.
- Prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently.
- Update and maintain all documentation as required.
- Other duties as assigned or required.

- A BS in information technology, information systems, computer science, computer engineering, business, science, or a related field of study and a minimum of 5 years of Windows systems engineering and administration experience is required.
- Active DOE Q, active DOD Top Secret, or active DOD TS/SCI clearance is required.
- Proven expertise in managing Windows server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, and other core services.
- Strong knowledge of virtualization technology.
- Experience support Operational Technology (OT) environments.
- Experience working at a DOE facility.
- Familiarity with NSS federal computer systems and compliance standards is a plus.
- Experience with scripting and automation (e.g., Power Shell).
- Experience with STIG hardening.
- Knowledge of networking design and support.
- Experience in SANs: preferred experience Net App is desired.
- Experience with building and managing Citrix and VMware virtualization platforms.
- Excellent time management, problem-solving, and customer service skills.

- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. It is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position requiring a pre-placement drug test and participation in ongoing random drug testing.
