ICP Chemist

Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Advanced Technologies for Impurities Analysis (ATIA) laboratory manager and senior staff, conduct routine and non-routine analysis of samples to identify and quantify impurities of interest.
  • Work with a team responsible for producing impurities analyses required for all weapons materials.
  • Perform all aspects of analysis, including sample preparation, instrumentation calibration and standardization, routine, preventative, diagnostic and quality control maintenance, and data review.
  • Interface with customers and program managers to provide technical guidance on available analytical options and capabilities relevant to submitted analysis requests.
  • Collaborate with the laboratory manager to review and modernize current procedures as well as develop new methods and procedures for analytical services as technologies, requirements, and customer needs evolve.
  • Seek solutions to difficult analytical problems using the aforementioned techniques, working independently or in small teams.

Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science or engineering discipline.
  • Meeting the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (e.g., baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, at least 2 years job‑related experience, and 1 year nuclear experience or an DOE O 426.2A alternative).

Job Requirements
  • Skilled in data analysis, processing, and manipulation within multiple databases, spreadsheets, and custom software applications.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills with the ability to develop innovative approaches for trace impurities analysis.
  • Experience with technical standards, complex analytical equipment, and principles of analytical chemistry.
  • Proficiency in impurities chemistry via Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectroscopy instrumentation, and/or Combustion Techniques.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry plus relevant professional experience.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in multi‑discipline analytical techniques and functions.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and maintain strong organizational skills.

Security & Clearance

Requires a Q clearance; all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required. The position may require entry into Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which may include a counterintelligence‑scope polygraph examination. The position may also be designated under 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring a counterintelligence evaluation and polygraph.
