What You'll DoThis position requires the application of technical principles in the field of chemistry including applications in areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, and radiochemistry. The position will work with ACO laboratories, ACO project managers, Y-12 Development organization, and Y-12 program managers to implement analytical methods.
The Selected Chemist/scientist Will Be Responsible For- Performing qualitative and quantitative analyses on samples from internal and external customers to determine chemical composition, trace impurities, chemical, and physical properties using instrumentation including but not limited to: NMR, FTIR, XRD, XRF, SEM, LIBS, and LC-MS.
- Collaborating with Y-12 Development organization to successfully implement analytical methods in ACO.
- Carrying out tasks independently (with a high level of autonomy) and in a team environment with multiple laboratory groups.
- Serving as a leader, advisor, or consultant as required for development of new and alternative analytical methods.
- Interfacing with customers and program managers to provide technical guidance on available analytical options and capabilities relevant to analysis requests.
- Providing input to laboratory managers to review and modernize current procedures.
- Developing, implementing, and validating new methods and procedures for analytical services as technologies, time constraints, and customer requirements evolve.

Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field:
Minimum 7 years of relevant experience. Typical experience ranging from 10 to 15 years. - OR Master's degree in Chemistry or related field:
Minimum 6 years of relevant experience. Typical experience ranging from 10 to 15 years. - OR PhD:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience. - In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
Job Requirements
- Master's or PhD in Chemistry or related field.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, including technical writing skills.
- High level of autonomy, personal motivation, adaptability to changing situations, and strong leadership skills.
- Broad knowledge of multifaceted areas of chemistry, with experience in modernizing and optimizing lab processes and instrumentation.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently to meet milestones.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
