OverviewThe Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic. In this role you will, under limited supervision, perform tasks associated with installing, maintaining, and repairing a widerange of equipment for Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Major Duties/Responsibilities- Install, repair, and perform maintenance on heating, ventilation, and cooling units for both commercial and residential units such as commercial chillers, DX units, air handlers, cooling towers, distributed control systems, and other associated equipment.
- Inspect and diagnose mechanical and electrical components of HVAC systems; replace or repair components as needed.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance; recommend preventative maintenance as needed.
- Evacuate and charge refrigerant systems; safely handle, recover, recycle and reclaim different refrigerants.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
- Clean and repair drains on HVAC units.
- Fabricate, layout, fit, assemble and solder refrigerant lines.
- Install and calibrate electronic controls.
- Change or repair electric motors, coils, belts, bearings, fans (intake, exhaust), filters, and other components on equipment.
- Tests equipment for refrigerant leaks, adding Freon to refrigeration units as needed, and checks gauges for proper operation.
- Interface with both operations and research customers.
- Operate and monitor energy management control systems for multiple buildings in campus environment
Set up and operate a variety of hand and power tools. - Other tasks as assigned by management.

- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant industrial or commercial HVAC repair and maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Strong mechanical skills and experience. Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certification and other formal training or certifications.
- Industrial experience.
- Knowledge of federal regulations regarding the conservation, recovery, and recycling of refrigerants.
- Completion of a manufacturer's chiller rebuild class.
- Familiarity with Metasys DDC control systems.
- Physical Requirements:
Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required. - Visa Sponsorship:

- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real form of identification will be required.
- Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
