The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Painter. In this position, you will perform, under limited supervision, a wide variety of painting jobs utilizing various application methods throughout the laboratory.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:- Perform all types of painting, priming, and removal on the following surfaces: interior and exterior rooms,equipment, exterior of buildings, laboratories, pipes, handrails and stairwells, floors, steel, and other various surfaces.
- Use numerous application methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying.
- Apply epoxies, floor coatings, non-skid coatings, wall coverings, and caulking.
- Stripe parking lots and road surfaces.
- Fireproof wood and fire barriers.
- Prepare surfaces by scraping, wet sanding, patching, pressure washing, sandblasting, cleaning, ordegreasing.
- Hang drywall and finish sheetrock application.
- Install decals and vinyl frosting on glass surfaces.
- Perform specialty methods and applications such as special coatings, staining/finishing wood trim, texturing walls and ceilings, and hanging and stripping wallpaper.
- Choose the right paint or finish for the surface to be covered by analyzing the paint thickness, durability, easeof handling, method of application, and paint plan.
- Calculate the amount of materials needed for a job based on surface measurement and/or work orders.
- Provide superior customer service to internal and external customers

- HS diploma or GED.
- A minimum of five years of painting experience in commercial or industrial setting.

- Completion of a formal training program and industrial experience.
- Strong knowledge of various paint application methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying.
- Knowledge of surface preparation (scraping, wet sanding, patching, pressure washing, blasting, cleaning, ordegreasing).
- Knowledge of how to paint different types of surfaces such as offices, equipment, doors, pipes, handrails,steel, and other surfaces, including striping.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques related in painting in specialized areas and work environments.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques related to the safe use, storage, and disposal of paint and cleaningproducts and chemicals, and safe cleanup techniques.
Understand compatible and incompatible paints and substitutions. - Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to understand and comprehend instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team, other departments, etc.
- Physical Requirements:
Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required. - Visa Sponsorship:
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. - For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real form of identification will be required.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
