We are seeking a research professional with fundamental knowledge in artificial intelligence (AI) who will focus on developing and applying AI algorithms to signal and image data processing. Specific knowledge related to neural network design, training, and optimization is required. You will be joining a group with core expertise in sensor data analytics from multiple types of sensing modalities, where this expertise is applied to solve critical national problems in energy and security.

Demonstrated knowledge of emerging AI and machine learning techniques as well as understanding of basic signal and image processing concepts is required. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.

This position resides within the Multimodal Sensor Analytics (MSA) Group in the Energy Sensing, Analytics, and Communications (ESAC) Section, Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division (EEID) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, and demonstrate novel AI and data processing algorithms to extract information from various modalities of data, including imagery, EM/seismoacoustic signals, and text
  • Develop prototype software and visualizations to enable the application of new or existing data processing algorithms to various types and sources of data
  • Prepare presentations, publications, and reports to communicate research results and accomplishments to the appropriate audiences (sponsors, stakeholders, public)

Basic Qualifications
  • A Ph.D degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience developing, training, and applying AI algorithms to physical sensor data
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast‑paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre‑placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due to the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
