Job Description Summary
The Senior Electrical Substation Project Engineer will lead the multi‑discipline technical project team and contractors in the Grid Solutions Integration North America Region, coordinating with vendors, professional customer interface, and project managers. The role focuses on the full scope of HV/EHV substation design, ensuring quality, schedule, budget, and compliance with standards.
Essential Responsibilities- Lead and coordinate all technical aspects of AC power substation projects, including design, scheduling, and value engineering.
- Perform and review detailed quality checks, technical direction, and coordination with Project Managers for schedule and budget.
- Develop and oversee key design deliverables: single‑line diagrams, equipment specifications, general substation arrangement drawings (plan, layout, elevation, grounding, conduit/trench, cable routing, detail drawings, control building layouts), high‑voltage bus, structures, wiring arrangements, bill of materials, related studies, and calculations.
- Act as the single point of contact for all technical matters between customers, vendors, project managers, and engineering teams.
- Drive cross‑discipline coordination to deliver fully integrated substation solutions and ensure compliance with CTQs.
- Support sourcing, vendor quotation evaluation, and equipment selection, including lead preparation of high‑voltage equipment specifications and contractor work scopes.
- Assist the manager in ensuring team productivity, billable utilization, and timely, on‑budget engineering outputs.
- Support commissioning and interface efforts between customers and project stakeholders.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in industrial or utility HV/EHV substation design.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% (including international), complying with company travel and tax policies.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the U.S., with ability to obtain licensure in other states; willingness to use license.
- Experience with North American electric utility substation design standards.
- Expertise in transmission and distribution substation engineering, renewable energy substation design, outdoor substation design calculations, protection, and industrial power system design (12.5kV and above).
- Proficiency in key design calculations: battery sizing, DC system design, AC auxiliary power, transformer and breaker selection, conductor sizing, grounding, lightning protection, and insulation coordination.
- Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards and ability to develop complete engineering packages.
- Field‑testing and commissioning experience, strong emphasis on safety.
- Excellent customer‑facing communication and commercial awareness (e.g., change orders, project delivery).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD/Micro Station and design automation tools.
