We are seeking engineers to support long-term strategic planning, capacity expansion, electrification, clean energy, and climate adaptation. Roles include leading large, complex capacity expansion projects (e.g., substation expansions and new substations) with Senior Engineers expected to lead and innovate and General Engineers providing foundational technical support and growth into advanced responsibilities. Engineers on the Substation and Strategic Planning team provide technical guidance to ensure reliability, resilience, and efficiency of Com Ed’s electric distribution system.
Responsibilities also include applying advanced planning methodologies, load forecasting, system modeling for future grid needs driven by electrification, distributed energy resources, climate impacts, and policy mandates such as CEJA. The role collaborates across engineering, operations, and regulatory teams to justify infrastructure investments, optimize performance, and support decarbonization. Senior Engineers also mentor junior engineers and may work extended hours for storm or energy delivery emergencies.
PrimaryDuties
- Serve as an expert for a designated planning area, including knowledge of substation design, and develop long-range plans.
- Perform capacity planning studies of the Com Ed distribution system using CYME power flow analysis; prepare load forecasts and analyze modification and modernization impacts on the distribution grid.
- Design electrical drawings in AutoCAD; prepare scope and cost estimates for general load growth, electrification, data center, and substation projects.
- Evaluate, develop, and lead projects with significant financial and operational impact; plan, write, and perform tasks for project deliverables.
- Recommend strategies to improve system performance and cost-effectiveness aligned with company goals.
- Provide mentorship, peer review, and technical training to distribution planning staff and engineers.
- Engage with technical and industry organizations to stay informed on emerging technologies and challenges in the utility sector; make recommendations for new technologies, engineering techniques, and tools.
- Participate in or lead cross-departmental meetings to ensure alignment within the company; may include oversight of contractors.
- Support regulatory filings (e.g., CPCN, Reconciliation, Grid Plan) with the General Engineer; may serve as an expert witness or provide expert opinions for planning-related information as a Senior Engineer.

- Applies technical knowledge to promote a safe work environment and enhance customer satisfaction.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer; knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices.
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
- Knowledge and ability to apply problem-solving approaches and engineering theory.
- Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, codes, methods, and practices in area of expertise.
- 7+ years of professional engineering experience; thorough knowledge of unique areas of engineering expertise.
- Ability to apply advanced engineering principles to identify and resolve complex issues.
- Minimum of three related career experiences or Lead Member of a recognized industry committee or Professional Engineer license, advanced degree, MBA, or Project Management Certification. Note on experience reductions may apply per policy (e.g., master’s degree or PE license may reduce required OJT by up to 1 year).
