The Manager of General Accounting plays a critical leadership role in overseeing the execution of the company’s general accounting policies and procedures in a large, complex organization. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with GAAP, maintaining strong internal controls, and delivering accurate, timely financial results in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this position leads key aspects of the month‑end close, partners cross‑functionally across the business, supports audits, and drives continuous improvement across accounting processes, systems, and controls.
The ideal candidate has experience operating in enterprise‑scale organizations (typically $1B+ in revenue) and thrives in environments where processes are being enhanced, standardized, and modernized.
- Lead and manage the general ledger month‑end close process for a high‑volume, enterprise‑scale business, ensuring entries are complete, accurate, and timely.
- Review GL activity for unusual transactions, trends, or outliers and proactively elevate findings and insights to senior leadership.
- Supervise and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations for critical accounts, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to close timelines.
- Drive process improvement initiatives across GL accounting, reconciliations, and close activities with a focus on scalability, efficiency, and controls.
- Evaluate and implement system enhancements, automation, and reporting improvements to support a growing and evolving finance environment.
- Lead, coach, and develop accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
- Serve as a key liaison for external auditors, coordinating audit activities and ensuring timely, high‑quality deliverables.
- Lead SOX/internal control testing efforts, identify control gaps, and partner with stakeholders to implement sustainable improvements.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with FP&A, Operations, IT, and other teams to identify inefficiencies, resolve issues, and improve end‑to‑end processes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including people‑leadership in complex organizations.
- Experience in large, enterprise‑scale companies (often $1B+ in revenue) or similarly complex environments.
- Background in public accounting strongly preferred.
- Strong ERP experience (e.g., Oracle, SAP); experience supporting or leading system implementations or transformations is a plus.
- Advanced Excel skills and strong data analysis capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a fast‑changing, evolving environment with shifting priorities.
- Proven people leader capable of developing high‑performing teams.
- Experience in distribution, automotive, retail, or multi‑location businesses is a plus.
- Experience in a private equity‑backed or transformation‑focused organization is a plus.
