Position: Helper Overhead (Inside)- Oakbrook Terrace, IL

Primary Purpose

Under direct supervision in a field crew, to perform groundwork associated with construction, repair, or maintenance of overhead lines. In addition, perform the less‑skilled manual operations as a member of a crew in connection with the Construction and Maintenance work on the overhead system. Must work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform manual tasks such as digging, back‑filling, removing debris, mixing cement, assembling and dismantling equipment, and operating hand and power tools from ladders and structures.

Duties
  • Prepare for job operations by obtaining, carrying, and setting down tools and equipment from the truck to the work area.
  • Assist in assembling the truck derrick, stiff leg, attaching steel lines and chains, and performing other preparatory operations as required.
  • Hoist tools and equipment to workers on the pole and receive equipment lowered to the ground.
  • Perform minor assembling and dismantling operations such as installing pole and arm hardware, installing earth anchors, attaching pole guards, ground wires and mouldings.
  • Dig, remove dirt and debris, mix cement, back‑fill, tamp, lift and carry poles, saw and split poles in collaboration with team members.
  • Assist in transitioning tools and equipment to vaults and clean work areas upon completion.
  • Drive trucks or truck‑and‑trailer, and operate trailer‑mounted equipment, portable generators, concrete breakers, and hand pumps as instructed.
  • Safeguard the public during hazardous operations and promote safety on the job.
  • Perform watch and guard duty on and around mobile emergency equipment and other related work as assigned.
  • By 90 days of classification, demonstrate satisfactory use of pole climbers and safety belts.
Job Scope

This position requires participation in the local union and payment of union dues.

Minimum Education

High School/GED

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possession of Commercial Driver's Instruction permit.
  • Successful completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) test.
  • Advanced certification from an Electrical Line Worker Program or relevant military experience or completion of Albat or equivalent (international), or 1–2 years of previous utility construction experience.
  • Successful completion of Company's assessments.
  • Ability to climb and work at heights with hand tools and power tools from ladders and structures.
  • Proficiency in operating trucks with and without trailers.
  • Excellent work performance, attendance, and safety record.
  • Prepared for overtime work, including responding to callouts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Pole Climbing experience.
  • Military experience.
  • Construction (residential, commercial or civil) or skilled trade experience.
