As a Sanitarian Specialist with the Louisiana Office of Public Health, you’ll lead inspections, investigations, and enforcement across critical programs like Retail Food, Onsite Wastewater, Institutions, and Food Safety Product Recalls. This dynamic role blends technical expertise and leadership with hands‑on fieldwork and travel, giving you the opportunity to safeguard public health and consumer safety wherever it matters most.

Possession

of License and Experience
  • Three years of experience as a sanitarian; OR
  • A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus two years of experience as a sanitarian.

Special Requirements
  • Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Job Duties:
  • Implements program services in the parish by inspecting retail food markets and restaurants to verify sanitary conditions; inspecting sewage and waste disposal systems for private homes, communities, commercial entities and trailer parks to verify compliance with the State Sanitary Code and to prevent or correct improper disposal of waste. Manages and directs inspections of institutions, such as prisons, schools, day care centers, nursing homes, etc.

    to verify hygienic living conditions; inspecting waste disposal facilities to verify sanitary conditions. Directs the investigations and resolution of complaints concerning unsanitary conditions and nuisances affecting the public health.
  • Administers all Sanitarian Services programs in their designated parish by developing and/or implementing guidelines and procedures for the delivery of services by giving an accurate accounting of the units' productivity using the computer Sanitarian Events Tracking System to accumulate data and prepare activity reports ensuring that program goals and objectives are met.
  • Directs activities associated with emergencies such as floods, hurricanes, acts of vandalism and accidental contamination by carrying out surveillance and monitoring activities, etc. which may require working after regular office hours and on weekends. Confers with public officials and civic groups in person or by telephone regarding environmental and public health problems and interprets program objectives and policies.
  • Attends in-service training, workshops and other continuing education seminars as required and approved in order to maintain professional expertise and licensure. Performs other tasks necessary to ensure smooth operation of the office.
