Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced mechanic who takes pride in their craft and is looking for an opportunity to grow alongside a progressive and expanding organization. The City of Oakdale continues to invest in its employees, facilities, and services, making this an exciting time to join our team.
This position is based out of the City’s new Public Works facility, which includes a dedicated mechanic work area designed to support efficient and safe maintenance operations.

Under general supervision, this position performs work in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of automotive, truck, and other mechanical equipment, including preventive maintenance and general overhaul work on gasoline and diesel engines and electrical equipment on a variety of city‑owned equipment. The successful candidate must be familiar with a variety of pieces of equipment, comfortable using technology to document process and repairs, and be a creative problem‑solver.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare, evaluate and complete preventative maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally or through outside vendors, in a cost‑effective and timely manner
- Perform general overhaul and preventive maintenance work on mechanical equipment, including vans, automobiles, light and heavy trucks, road maintenance equipment, park’s turf maintenance equipment, air compressors, chain saws, snow removal equipment, tractors, water pumps, generators, trailers, and other city‑owned equipment
- Diagnose and perform electrical repairs such as wiring, emergency lighting, WiMax, AVL/GPS, and two‑way radio equipment
- Operate tire changer, wheel balancer, brake lathe, cutting torch, and welders
- Diagnose complex vehicle and equipment problems
- Evaluate the status of mechanical equipment and perform or schedule needed repairs
- Perform tune‑ups, adjustments, and oil changes
- Operate diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electronic, and air‑driven tools
- Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work
- Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate
- Maintain accurate records on all work performed and supplies used
- Order parts and maintain inventory
- Develop and maintain shop procedures for the maintenance and repair of equipment and mechanical systems
- Perform DOT Commercial Vehicle inspections and assist in all aspects of Public Works maintenance activities within the Parks, Recreation, Streets, and Utility divisions
- Respond to after‑hours calls/inquiries as directed or needed during any calendar day
- Maintain prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance
- Take direction and work well with others
- Communicate clearly and professionally in writing and verbally
- Operate a laptop computer to process work orders using the City’s asset management and work order program and diagnose gasoline and diesel engine fuel management systems, vehicle body management systems, and snow and ice control equipment
- React to change productively and handle tasks, including work outside the fleet division, as assigned
- Work in conjunction with other department staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- One (1) year of experience in mechanical equipment repair or related field
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
- Possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire and maintain a valid Class A CDL driver’s license
- Possess a DOT Minnesota Commercial Vehicle Inspector’s Certificate or obtain within six (6) months
- ASE certification or ability to obtain in one (1) year
- Furnish a complete set of hand tools
- Associate’s degree as Automotive Technician, Diesel Technician, Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician, or Heavy Construction Equipment Technician
- Five (5) years of experience in mechanical equipment repair or related field
- Current ASE Certification in any of the following:
Automotive & Light Truck (A1‑A9, X1), Auto Maintenance & Light Repair (G1), Medium‑Heavy Truck (T1‑T8)
