We are seeking to appoint a full-time Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon with demonstrated expertise in cardiothoracic surgery.
This is an opportunity to join a progressive and collaborative cardiothoracic service committed to delivering high-quality, patient‑centred care across the continuum of treatment. Wellington Hospital provides cardiac services for approximately 1.2 million patients in the central region of New Zealand spanning from Nelson to Hawkes Bay. We have active aortic, mitral, arrhythmia, thoracic and general cardiothoracic programmes.
The service works collaboratively with vascular specialists in care of patients with complex vascular aortic pathology. We work closely with cardiology to deliver a growing structural heart programme. An interest in teaching is important and we are accredited for two RACS SET trainees for two years each and are supported by a total of ten resident medical officers (eight registrars and two house surgeons).
We have academic affiliations with the University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington and The Medical Research Institute of New Zealand allowing development of academic interests and research programmes if desired. Wellington is the second largest provider of cardiac services in New Zealand, and volumes through the unit are in the top ten compared to similar tertiary units across Australasia.
The successful applicant will provide comprehensive care, delivering inpatient and outpatient management, surgical optimisation, operative treatment across the cardiothoracic spectrum, and post‑operative follow‑up.
This role includes leadership of operating lists and MDT meetings, participation in the on‑call roster, supervision of trainees and junior staff, and active contribution to service development, quality improvement, and innovation within a high‑performing multidisciplinary cardiac surgical programme.
