Fall 2026 Nursing Graduate Research Assistants (RAs) are selected for excellence in scholarship and potential as researchers. Nursing Graduate Research Assistants provide approximately 20 hours of service per week, over the course of a semester and under the supervision of faculty members. Research activities should relate directly to the student’s degree requirements and should be reasonably expected to contribute to the student’s academic program.

You should not consider that all Research is done in a lab.

Qualifications

Graduate Assistants must be a nursing PhD student fully admitted and enrolled full-time (least 8 credits minimum) throughout their plan of study while in the PhD in Nursing graduate program. Graduate course work and/or research must contribute directly to the satisfaction of Oakland's degree requirements. Graduate assistants must have and maintain good academic standing (3.0 grade point average).

Tuition

Tuition (eight credits per semester or a total of 16 credits) will be compensated. Any additional credits and class fees, including books, will be the responsibility of the student.

Compensation

Student will receive a pay check (via direct deposit if desired) on the last business day of each month for the duration of the assistantship.

Job Functions

Perform scholarly activities that relate directly to the student's degree requirements. Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) have a primary responsibility of participating in scholarly activities. They provide approximately 20 hours of activity service per week over the course of his/her plan of study. While a research assistant is expected to contribute in many ways to the research project, typical responsibilities include the following:

  • prepare materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations
  • conduct literature reviews
  • prepare interview questions
  • prepare materials for IRB
  • recruit and/or interview subjects
  • maintain records of interviews
  • safeguard the confidentiality of subjects
  • collect and analyze data
  • manage and respond to project related email
  • oversee undergraduate students working on the research project (maintaining records on assignment completion, acting as liaison/mediator between the undergraduate students and the faculty researcher)
  • attend project meetings
  • attend area seminars and other meetings as necessary
  • prepare progress reports for the PI and funding agency
  • prepare other articles, reports, and presentations
  • monitor the project budget
  • fulfill other duties and responsibilities which may be assigned by individual researchers
Hours per Week

Maximum of 20 hours of service per week over the course of each semester the student is enrolled in PhD in Nursing course work.

Minimum GPA

Graduate Research Assistants must maintain at least an overall 3.0 grade point average and make satisfactory academic progress, general degree and other program requirements as published in the Graduate Catalog or program handbook.
