About Coastline College
Coastline College, a community college located just outside of Los Angeles in Orange County, California, has campuses in Westminster, Garden Grove and Newport Beach and an administration building in Fountain Valley. The college is part of the Coast Community College District and the California Community College system.

Position:Student Assistant (Non-Academic, Non-Classified)
Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. They are at-will employees with no entitlement rights to any position in the District and are not benefits eligible. Student Assistants are limited in hours and may not work more than 19.5 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and may work up to 28 hours per week outside of those semesters.
They are prohibited from being employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).
A student assistant works in a department with job responsibilities aligned to student status and non-classified duties. Duties range from unskilled to skilled and may involve manual, clerical, and public contact work. Assignments consider class timetables and exams and are more flexible than off-campus jobs.
Student assistants may choose assignments aligned with their academic and career goals; duties depend on the needs of the position.
Representative DutiesSpecific duties are defined by the appropriate Division and/or Department. On-the-job training may occur. Roles are categorized as:
- Student Assistant I – Entry level/Semi-skilled:
Work under immediate supervision with standard duties and established procedures. - Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced:
Work under general supervision with varied, less routine tasks and possible access to complex data systems and confidential information; minimum one year of experience in the same student assistant assignment. - Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead:
Work under general supervision with a broad variety of tasks; may direct lower-level staff; minimum two years of experience in the same assignment.
Student Assistant I:
Little or no prior experience or education required.
Student Assistant II:
Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.
Student Assistant III:
Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
- Skills required to perform job assignments.
- Depending on the level and assignment, limited independent judgment and decision-making may be required.
- Ability to balance work and studies.
- Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work-study through the financial aid office to be eligible for a student assistant position under federal work-study funding.
- Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diversity and equity considerations within the student population (DEIA).

Note: Non-academic, non-classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel and impairment of existing contracts by the employment of students in work-study or work experience programs. Student Assistants are at-will employees and are not benefits eligible.
Work Hours and Conditions;Employment Terms
- Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during fall and spring semesters. Outside of those semesters, the maximum is 28 hours per week.
- Student Assistants are prohibited from other District employment in the same fiscal year.
