Hack the Hood (HtH) launched in 2013 to empower Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and AAPI communities to shift from technology consumers to technology producers, designers, and creators. About The PositionAs a Teacher Assistant (TA), you will work with and take direction from Technical Instructors, who, with the assistance of the TA’s, deliver training content in Hack the Hood’s informal education programs. The curriculum offers our OUSD learners an introduction to coding in python & AI with college credits, offered by Laney College as an included module. The program emphasizes applications for social justice and ethics.
The successful candidate will have practical or theoretical technology, computer programming and/or data science skills with an emphasis on how technology can be used for constructive social and racial justice goals. Hack the Hood alumni will stand out; your previous experience with Hack the Hood materials as a learner will set your application apart. We are a small organization, so a self‑starter who appreciates individual and team accountability is required.
In this role, you will be working with learners ages 14‑25. You will be required to commit to approximately twelve hours per week of class time. Learners are primarily geographically located in the Bay Area.
Responsibilities- Leverage existing teaching materials and student resources (course outlines, instructional materials, and training aids) to support learners in our Summer 2026 cohort
- Provide group/peer‑to‑peer opportunities and technical support to learners
- Collaborate with instructors and programs team members to identify young people who might benefit from receiving additional support leveraging Hack the Hood materials
- Experience working and learning with Black, Latinx, and Indigenous learners
- A passion for and knowledge of approaches to racial justice & equity in the technical domain
- A passion for inclusion in technology
- Working knowledge of python (or other OOP)
- A curiosity about coding with AI
- Experience in teaching, tutoring, or assisting in classrooms or giving technical talks, workshops, or tutorials at conferences, meetups, or schools is a plus!
- Grad or undergrad Computer Science, mathematics, or other STEM equivalent (e.g. Hack the Hood Program, certification of achievement, tech bootcamp)
