Job Description

Basic Function: Under the direction of a Principal, serve as a mentor assisting individual students identified as working below grade level by providing additional instruction in basic academic skills.

Representative Duties (Essential Functions)
  • Provide additional instruction in reading, writing, spelling, math or other subject areas to students working below grade level; work individually or in small groups.
  • Assist students with classroom assignments, homework, test preparation, papers and projects.
  • Help teachers with classroom activities such as duplicating materials, correcting papers, filing, and other tasks as requested.
  • Assist students in understanding and adapting to educational and social settings and developing organized study habits.
  • Monitor classroom, recess, and other playground activities as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and either:
    • An Associate of Arts degree or higher, or
    • 48 or more college units, or
    • A passing score on a qualifying test (CBEST, Para Pro, or CODESP).
  • Eligibility requirements: fingerprinting, passing a tuberculosis test and/or other employment clearance as required.
Licenses & Other Requirements

Personal appearance, grooming, and language patterns that provide a satisfactory example to pupils.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: basic subjects taught in district schools (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading); safe classroom and playground practices; instructional methods and techniques; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; basic record‑keeping techniques; classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.

  • Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
  • Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.
  • Print and write legibly.
  • Perform basic arithmetic operations quickly and accurately (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Learn the procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Supervise and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures.

  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds (or carry any object up to 15 pounds).
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.
