Job DescriptionAssist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in an assigned educational program; support students in meeting the goals and objectives of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP); attend to students’ physical and health needs; monitor and report student progress; perform clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities and management.
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Para‑EducatorAssist in providing high‑quality instruction to individual or small groups of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students; communicate proficiently using a signing system such as American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgeon Signed English (PSE), Manually Coded English (MCE), and appropriate facial expressions.
Visual Impairment Para‑EducatorAssist classroom teacher in delivering instruction and meeting IEP objectives for students who are blind or visually impaired; read and demonstrate Braille; operate supportive equipment (audio devices, Braille printer, tactile equipment); aid students in moving through the school environment.
Representative Duties- Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students (Pre‑K through Young Adult) in assigned classroom or program.
- Read IEP goals to support instruction and maximize student progress when trained by appropriate staff.
- Communicate with teachers and/or parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Implement classwide and individual behavior strategies to maintain a safe learning environment when trained by appropriate staff.
- Assist students with washing, toileting, diapering, dressing, grooming, and other personal hygiene activities.
- Assist with transportation of students; reposition students requiring medical equipment, wheelchairs, braces, and other orthopedic equipment; ensure safe use of wheelchairs and prosthetic devices.
- Assist with loading and unloading of students on/from buses, automobiles, wheelchairs, stretchers, and gurneys.
- Volunteer to administer Diastat and perform medical procedures when trained and supervised by appropriate staff.
- Provide basic first aid and specialized health care as needed and directed.
- Assure health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.
- Assist the teacher in monitoring, motivating, and training students with disabilities; manage behavior according to approved procedures; report progress and follow behavior intervention plans.
- Perform clerical duties such as preparing, typing, duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers, recording grades, keeping attendance, and maintaining student files.
- Support teacher by setting up work areas and displays, operating audio‑visual equipment, and distributing/collecting materials.
- Administer, monitor, and score tests and assignments, rephrase materials, and explain instructions and words.
- Assist students in developing self‑help, social, and communication skills.
- Notify appropriate personnel of substance abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, or potential suicide.
- Assist in monitoring lunchroom activities and mealtime procedures, including feeding and cleaning.
- Carry out positive reinforcement and reactive strategies identified in a behavior support plan.
- Respond to emergency situations and document safety concerns.
- Supervise students during classroom, recess, playground activities, and field trips.
- Operate office, instructional, and audio‑visual equipment; provide technical assistance and maintenance of specialized equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office.
- Assist with data collection and determine when a student has reached a benchmark.
- Work as part of a professional team for the betterment of special education programs and sites.
- Keep classrooms and school facilities neat, clean, orderly, and safe.
