Job DescriptionUnder the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Para educator will assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in an assigned educational program. The role supports students with disabilities to meet the goals and objectives of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP), attends to physical and health needs, monitors progress, and performs clerical duties related to classroom activities and management.
DistinguishingCharacteristics Requiring Specialized Skills
- Deaf and Hard of Hearing Para‑Educator: Must communicate proficiently using American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgeon Signed English (PSE), or Manually Coded English (MCE) and appropriate facial expressions.
- Visual Impairment Para‑Educator: Must read and demonstrate Braille, operate supportive equipment (audio devices, Braille printer, tactile equipment, etc.), and assist with mobility using a cane.
- Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students (Pre‑K through Young Adult) in assigned classroom or program, helping students meet IEP goals.
- Read IEP goals to support instruction and maximize student progress.
- Communicate with teachers and/or parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Implement behavior strategies and collaborate with staff to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Assist with lesson plans, reinforcement of instruction, monitoring drills, and assignments.
- Provide personal care (washing, toileting, dressing, grooming) and hygiene support for students.
- Transport students, reposition those using medical or orthopedic equipment, and ensure safe wheelchair and device operation.
- Assist with loading/unloading students on buses or vehicles.
- Volunteer to administer Diastat and perform medical procedures when trained.
- Provide basic first aid, specialized health care, and follow safety procedures.
- Manage behavior, monitor progress, and report on student performance.
- Perform clerical duties: prepare materials, score papers, record grades, keep attendance, maintain student files.
- Set up work areas, operate AV equipment, and distribute materials.
- Administer tests and assignments, adjust materials, and clarify instructions.
- Support social, communication, and self‑help skill development.
- Respond to emergencies and follow incident protocols.
- Supervise students in and outside the classroom, including recess and field trips.
- Operate and maintain office, instructional, and AV equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office.
- Collect data, track goals, and report on benchmark achievement.
- Contribute to team‑based improvement of special education programs.
- Keep classrooms and facilities neat, clean, and safe.
- Lead group activities and maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Adhere to codes of conduct and participate in staff development.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Meet District prerequisites, relevant experience, and ability to perform essential functions.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills demonstrated in interview or writing samples.
- Knowledge of special‑needs students, Common Core standards, behavior strategies, and statewide disability categories.
- Understanding of assessment practices, child development, and safe classroom management.
- High school diploma or equivalent AND either an Associate’s degree or ≥ 48 college units, or a passing score on CBEST, Para Pro, or CODESP, plus related training.
- One year of experience working with children of various ages and with physical needs.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Willingness to complete at least 15 hours of additional training, including mandatory reporter training.
- Valid California driver’s license (if applicable).
- Office and diverse school site environments; frequent driving; physical demands including lifting up to 50 lb and beyond with assistance.
- Requires mental alertness, standing/sitting for extended periods, walking on uneven terrain, and ability to communicate clearly.
$31,170.90 – $53,312.90 per year.
