Class PurposePeralta Community College District is seeking qualified Part-Time Counselors to provide academic, career, transfer, and/or personal counseling services to students. The Counselor assists students in identifying and achieving their educational, career, and personal goals; develops comprehensive educational plans; provides guidance regarding academic programs, transfer opportunities, and career pathways; and connects students with appropriate campus and community resources.
AssignmentsAssignments may be made at any of the District's colleges and may include day, evening, weekend, in-person, online, hybrid, or other service modalities based on program needs.
Examples of Duties- Provide individual and group counseling to students regarding academic, career, transfer, and personal or student-success concerns.
- Counsel students regarding degree, certificate, transfer, general education, and graduation requirements and assist in identifying education and career goals; develop comprehensive student educational plans.
- Assist students in understanding academic policies, procedures, program requirements, course selection, prerequisites, and academic progress.
- Provide transfer counseling and information regarding transfer requirements, articulation agreements, and university opportunities.
- Connect students with appropriate campus programs, student services, community resources, and other support services.
- Maintain appropriate and accurate counseling records and documentation in accordance with District procedures and applicable confidentiality requirements.
- Participate in outreach, workshops, orientations, transfer activities, registration activities, and other student-support programs as assigned.
- Participate in department meetings, professional development, and other activities appropriate to the part-time faculty assignment.
- Comply with District policies and procedures, applicable collective bargaining agreements, accreditation standards, and federal and state laws and regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Possession of a Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling
- Or possession of a bachelor's degree in one of the fields above and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) as applicable under California Community Colleges minimum qualification standards
- Or the Equivalent
- Understanding of, sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of Peralta Colleges' students, faculty, staff and community.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as established by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications by submitting official or unofficial transcripts and providing a complete and detailed record of relevant professional work experience in their application materials.
The District will review education and work history to determine whether minimum qualifications are met. Determinations are made in accordance with Title 5 regulations and District procedures. Official transcripts and additional verification of employment will be required upon offer of employment.
Experience Required in lieu of Master's DegreeFor disciplines requiring a degree and professional experience, applicants must clearly describe how their education and work experience meet the stated minimum qualifications.
EquivalencyApplicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications exactly may apply for equivalency. Equivalency determinations are made through a separate review process in accordance with District procedures.
