Elev8 Ameri Corps Program

Safe Passages is a non‑profit organization based in Oakland, CA. We work to improve the lives of children, youth, and families through education programs, community partnerships, and public advocacy. We are looking for passionate, motivated, and dedicated individuals like you to join our Ameri Corps program for a year of service starting in August 2026.

Ameri Corps members serve at school sites in Oakland and Emeryville in teams of 3 to 10. Members are trained to provide tutoring and mentoring to students in Reading, Writing, and Math. No previous teaching experience is necessary—just a passion for working with youth and making a difference.

Safe Passages is looking for compassionate, motivated individuals to serve as Ameri Corps Elev8 Members—supporting K–12 students in building confidence, resilience, and social‑emotional learning.

• Support student success by providing tutoring and education to K-12 students on subjects such as Reading, Writing and Math.
• Build meaningful, positive connections with students through mentorship and daily engagement that support student’s academic and social‑emotional growth.
• Lead creative and engaging lesson plans, activities, games, and projects with students.
• Collaborate with Safe Passages staff, teachers, school staff and other Ameri Corps members.
• Support school events, family engagement nights, and community projects.
• Assist in collecting and tracking data on outreach efforts and student support services.
• Participate in regular trainings, team meetings, and professional development to enhance skills in community outreach, education, youth development, and leadership.

• Twice monthly living allowance starting at: $1,157 (full-time), $868 (part-time).
• Segal Ameri Corps Education Award: $5,176 (full-time), $3,697 (part-time).
• Potential transportation stipend.
• Application support for Cal Fresh, Covered CA, and other public benefits.
• Health coverage and childcare reimbursement (full‑time members only).
• Ongoing training and mentorship from experienced educators and community resource navigators.

• A genuine interest in working with children and supporting their growth.
• A positive, flexible, and resilient attitude.
• Communication skills to work with children, families, school staff, and volunteers.
• Experience working with and respect for diverse communities and backgrounds.

• Experience in teaching, tutoring, or youth development.
• Demonstrated commitment to community service.
• Bilingual or multilingual skills (highly valued).

• Must pass criminal history check (FBI, DOJ, NSOPW) searches.
• Proof of tuberculosis clearance.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal permanent resident status.
• Commitment to full term of service.
• Must be 17+ at time of service start.
