This position, 0.8 FTE, supports instructional services in early childhood and special education environments. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the para educator assists a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students, supports students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), attends to the physical and health needs of students, monitors and reports student progress, and performs clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities and management.

This role may serve as a stepping stone toward further professional development opportunities such as Instructional Support Specialist or a certificated position.

Reports to:

Assigned Supervisor.

Special Education and School Sites with Transitional Kindergarten classrooms.

• Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students (Pre‑K through young adult) in an assigned classroom or program, helping students with disabilities meet the goals and objectives in their IEPs.
• Read IEP goals to support instruction and maximize student progress.
• Communicate with teachers and/or parents as required to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
• Implement classwide and individual behavior strategies to maintain a safe learning environment.
• Communicate professionally with staff and parents, both written and verbal, to provide transparent communication.
• Assist in executing lesson plans; reinforce instruction for individuals or small groups; monitor drills, practices, and assignments to reinforce learning concepts.
• Assist students with washing, toileting (including lifting on and off the toilet), diapering, dressing, grooming, and other personal hygiene activities.
• Assist with transportation of students, repositioning students requiring medical equipment, wheelchairs, braces, or other orthopedic devices; make necessary adjustments and ensure safe use of equipment.
• Assist with loading and unloading students on and off buses, automobiles, wheelchairs, stretchers, and gurneys.
• Volunteer to receive training to administer Diastat and perform medical procedures as needed, under supervision.
• Provide basic first aid and specialized health care as directed.
• Ensure health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.
• Assist the teacher in monitoring, motivating, and training students with disabilities; observe and manage student behavior according to approved procedures.
• Perform clerical duties such as preparing, typing, and duplicating instructional materials; scoring papers and recording grades; assist with attendance; prepare and maintain student files.
• Support the teacher by setting up work areas and displays; operate audio‑visual equipment; distribute and collect supplies and materials; consult with teachers on program materials.
• Administer, monitor, and score tests and assignments, ensuring reliable testing environments and interpreting instructions.
• Assist students in developing self‑help, social, and communication skills.
• Notify immediately appropriate personnel and agencies of suspected substance abuse, child neglect, severe medical conditions, or potential suicide.
• Assist in monitoring lunchroom activities and mealtime procedures, including feeding and cleaning.
• Assist in carrying out positive reinforcement procedures and reactive strategies identified in a behavior support plan.
• Respond to emergency situations to ensure immediate resolution and appropriate documentation of safety concerns.
