We’re seeking a mechanically focused R&D Manager to lead a growing team of engineers and technicians across two sites (Livermore, CA and Wendell, NC). This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for driving innovation in medium-voltage mechanical switch gear, overseeing product development, and shaping the future of Siemens’s engineering capabilities. This position will be based in Livermore, CA.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a cross-functional R&D team (up to 15 engineers and technicians across two locations)
  • Drive mechanical design and development of switch gear enclosures, assemblies, and systems
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, test labs, and product care teams to deliver integrated solutions
  • Oversee prototyping, testing, and validation to meet UL, IEC, IEEE and other standards
  • Manage projects from concept through commercialization, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality targets are met
  • Support factory readiness and manufacturability of new designs
  • Act as a key interface between R&D, product management, manufacturing, and other stakeholders
  • Contribute to strategic planning and roadmap development with the VP of R&D
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, safety regulations, and Siemens quality processes
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and digitalization efforts within product development
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (Mechanical Engineering strongly preferred)
  • 7+ years of R&D experience, ideally in medium voltage power distribution systems or switch gear
  • 3+ years of leadership experience, including team management or technical project leadership
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a continual and permanent basis without company sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes
  • Familiarity with electrical standards (UL, IEC, IEEE) and how they apply to mechanical systems
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., Solid Works) and mechanical simulation software
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • Experience working in cross-site or matrixed teams is a plus
  • Knowledge of product certification and compliance processes
  • Background in lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or design for manufacturability
  • Familiarity with digital substations, smart grid, or IoT-enabled systems
