Environmental Client Service Leader – Northern California (Nor Cal)

WSP is seeking an experienced Environmental Client Service Leader to lead the development and execution of an environmental business strategy focused on growth, client service excellence, and market leadership. The role is central to expanding WSP’s presence in Nor Cal by increasing sales with existing clients and strategically broadening our client base. The ideal candidate brings established relationships with SFPUC, SMUD, PG&E, Caltrans, DWR, and a broad environmental background spanning compliance, geotechnical, planning/permitting, natural and cultural resources, water, climate resilience, waste, remediation, and cross‑market experience in power, water, state/municipal, federal, and industrial/commercial sectors.

The position is a seller‑doer opportunity emphasizing business development, strategic growth, and client relationship management. The leader will source new opportunities and collaborate with technical and operational leaders to position WSP for long‑term success, oversee client service delivery across a diverse portfolio, and contribute to regional strategy, mentoring emerging leaders, and shaping the future of our environmental practice.

Your Impact
  • Increase environmental sales and expand strategic relationships in Northern California and high‑potential geographies, positioning WSP as a preferred partner for major infrastructure and environmental programs.
  • Develop a comprehensive business development strategy for environmental growth, strengthening account plans, deepening client engagement, and capturing additional work through existing contracts, on‑call agreements, and long‑term programs.
  • Expand the opportunity pipeline and lead capture efforts for key environmental pursuits, shaping win themes, coordinating pursuit teams, guiding proposal strategy, and ensuring competitive, compliant, and compelling submissions.
  • Serve as a technical or project lead on high‑visibility, strategically important projects, providing oversight, quality assurance, and subject‑matter expertise to ensure successful delivery and strong client satisfaction.
  • Participate in professional societies and industry organizations; represent WSP in leadership roles, committees, and elevate the firm’s visibility and reputation in the Northern California market.
  • Collaborate with regional and national practice leaders to align market strategy, share insights, and leverage WSP’s multidisciplinary capabilities for integrated, cross‑practice opportunities.
  • Mentor and develop emerging talent within the Earth & Environment team, fostering a culture of client service excellence, technical quality, and proactive business development engagement.
  • Monitor market trends, funding streams, and regulatory drivers to anticipate client needs, identify emerging opportunities, and inform strategic planning and investment decisions.
Required Qualifications
  • 12+ years of technical and business development experience in environmental services, with established relationships in the Northern California area and a proven record of winning, growing, and managing major accounts.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or a related technical discipline; advanced coursework or specialized training for complex environmental programs is favored.
  • PE and/or PMP certification preferred.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and presentation skills; ability to influence decision‑makers, guide multidisciplinary teams, and represent WSP in high‑visibility client and industry settings.
  • Experience leading teams of highly skilled professionals and building internal partnerships to deliver integrated solutions within a large enterprise.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, coordination, and managerial skills; track record of managing complex pursuits, resolving challenges, and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Strategic thinker able to act decisively in a fast‑paced, competitive market environment, focused on long‑term growth and client service excellence.
  • Demonstrated success mentoring and developing staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
