Position: Transportation Engineer (Continuous)

About the Position

The City of Oakland is recruiting three (3) Transportation Engineer vacancies within the Department of Transportation. These positions are open to individuals who meet the minimum qualifications and may be filled under a continuous recruitment process, creating eligible lists for future vacancies.

Job Overview

Transportation Engineers within the Department of Transportation design, plan, and oversee projects that improve safety, accessibility, mobility, and sustainability across the city. Responsibilities include performing engineering analyses, preparing project documents, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, supervising technical staff, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform professional engineering work related to transportation, traffic, and civil engineering.
  • Prepare project documents for the planning, design, construction, integration, deployment, and operation of multimodal transportation projects.
  • Supervise, prepare, and review transportation improvement plans, specifications, and cost estimates; design traffic signal configurations and geometric layouts; and prepare traffic control plans.
  • Review transportation studies, conduct investigations, and provide recommendations on traffic control device installation.
  • Meet with and act as liaison to city departments, agencies, businesses, and citizen groups; provide technical information and present at public meetings.
  • Participate in capital improvement projects, administer consultant and construction contracts, and perform project inspections.
  • Provide lead direction and technical training to assigned staff.

Education and Experience
  • Education
    :
    Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience
    :
    At least 3 years of professional engineering experience in transportation or traffic engineering. A Master's degree in Transportation Engineering may substitute for 1 year of experience.
Required Licenses

Possession of a valid registration as a civil or traffic engineer in the State of California (or ability to obtain such registration) is required. Employees will be expected to operate motor vehicles and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
