Assistant Engineer

Job Overview

Assistant Engineer in the Development Engineering Section of Alameda County Public Works. Under general supervision, perform civil engineering work in the field and office, design and inspect roads, drainage facilities, and flood control structures, and undertake related responsibilities as required.

• Design and analyze road and flood control structures or components with accuracy and skill.
• Prepare civil design and construction contract drawings using AutoCAD Civil.
• Conduct construction material tests and prepare technical reports.
• Make technical presentations to internal staff and the public.
• Perform engineering research and subdivision review involving potential design impacts to road and flood control facilities.
• Support Associate and Senior Civil Engineers on project assignments.

Applicants must meet one of the following patterns:

• Pattern I:
  Equivalent to one year experience as a Junior Engineer in the Alameda County classified service.
• Pattern II
  :
  Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution plus two years of professional civil engineering experience.
• Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license required.

• Minimum two years proven work experience as a Public Works Engineer or similar role with emphasis on land development and construction.
• Working knowledge of public agency standards, guidelines, and the ability to research and interpret local, state, and federal regulations.
• Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff, developers, and the public.
• Organizational skills to collect, organize, and interpret project information and keep projects moving toward completion.
• Effective oral communication skills for one‑to‑one and group interactions, both in person and on the phone.
• Proficiency in CAD software and other engineering technologies for design and analysis.
• Preferred but not required possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers.
