Job Summary

Recruiting Junior Vehicle Systems Engineers (JVS) to join the Rolling Stock & Shops Engineering Division. This is an exciting opportunity for emerging engineers to contribute directly to the reliability, modernization, and performance of one of the nation’s largest and most innovative rail transit systems.

Pay Rate

Non‑Represented Pay Band E03: $ – $ annually. The starting salary offer will be between $ and $, commensurate with experience and education.

Reports To

Manager of Vehicle Systems Engineering or designee.

Position Overview

This announcement will establish an eligibility pool to fill vacancies that may occur within the next twelve (12) months. Two Junior Vehicle Systems Engineer vacancies exist: one in the Electrical division and one in the Mechanical division.

Ideal Candidates

Electrical Vehicle Systems Engineering (VSE): ‑ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. — Demonstrated competency in writing reports and technical procedures. — Experience with electrical power systems, microcontroller devices, ethernet networking, and other electro‑mechanical systems.

Mechanical Vehicle Systems Engineering (VSE): ‑ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. — Experience with mechanical, propulsion, braking, and electro‑mechanical systems.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with vehicle engineering duties in support of design, repair, overhaul, evaluation, reliability, and maintenance of BART rail transit vehicles.
  • Support creation and modification of engineering specifications, drawings, and calculations/analyses; gather data to inform engineering decisions.
  • Conduct field inspections and investigations of equipment failures; recommend corrective actions or design changes.
  • Assist in design and specification of special testing and servicing equipment.
  • Assist in designing computer hardware and software modifications; analyze and resolve computer, electrical, or mechanical system malfunctions.
  • Provide technical information—specifications, drawings, test results—to journey‑level engineering staff for repair, engineering, and design projects.
  • Assist in preparing engineering designs, specification costs, and quantity estimates for construction projects.
  • Conduct special studies and prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Assist in developing quality assurance criteria, inspection procedures, and compliance audits.
  • Operate mechanical and electrical test and measurement equipment safely and effectively.
Qualifications
  • Reliability & Customer Service Support:
    Troubleshoot and conduct root‑cause analysis of vehicle equipment failures impacting service and customer experience.
  • Transit Systems

    Collaboration:

    Work with maintenance staff, operations personnel, manufacturers, and senior engineering staff to support safe, reliable operations.
  • System Issue Analysis & Resolution:
    Use engineering software, technical drawings, schematics, and diagnostic equipment to analyze and resolve system issues.
  • Systems Engineering Fundamentals:
    Fundamental knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and electro‑mechanical systems.
  • Effective Communication & Task Management:
    Prioritize and manage multiple assignments in a fast‑paced environment; strong written and verbal communication.
  • Mobility for Field Work:
    Adequate mobility to conduct field inspections and investigations.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university.

Substitution:
Professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Other Requirements:
Sufficient mobility to perform field inspections and investigations.
