The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill three (3) Transportation Engineer vacancies within the Department of Transportation. These roles are part of a continuous recruitment pool that may be used for various full‑time, part‑time and permanent positions.

- Perform professional engineering work in transportation, traffic, and civil disciplines.
- Prepare project documents for planning, design, construction, integration and operation of multi‑modal transportation projects.
- Supervise, prepare and review transportation improvement plans, specifications, cost estimates; design traffic signal configurations, geometric layouts and traffic control plans.
- Review transportation studies, conduct investigations, and recommend installation of traffic control devices.
- Serve as liaison to city departments, agencies, businesses and citizen groups; provide technical information and present at public meetings.
- Participate in capital improvement projects, administer consultant and construction contracts, and perform project inspections.

The positions will be located in one of seven OakDOT sections:
Traffic Capital Projects, Complete Streets Paving & Sidewalks, Traffic Engineering, Bicycle & Pedestrian Program, Multimodal Corridor Operations, Right of Way Management and Engineering Services, or Major Projects Engineering. The selected candidate will serve as lead engineer for inter‑departmental or small capital projects within the chosen section.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, transportation, or a closely related field. - Experience:
Three (3) years of professional engineering experience in transportation or traffic engineering. A Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
- Valid registration as a civil or traffic engineer in California, or registration in another state with the ability to obtain California registration.
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to travel to various job sites.
- 15 paid holidays
- Vacation: 2 weeks per year minimum, with accrual based on years of service.
- Sick leave: 12 days per year.
- Health insurance covered by the City under Kaiser, Anthem, Blue Shield, United Health Care, and other plans.
- Dental and vision coverage paid by the City for employees and eligible dependents.
- Negotiated salary increases of 2.5% (July 2023, January 2024) and 2% (July 2024, March 2025).
- Retirement:
CalPERS with a pension formula of 2.5% at 55 for Classic members and 2% at 62 for new members. - Deferred compensation: 457(b) pre‑tax plan and after‑tax ROTH 401(k) plan.
