Job Description & DutiesUnder the general supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent will work as a first‑line supervisor, planning, coordinating, administering, and executing the work of a survey crew conducting preliminary, control, topographic, construction and cadastral land surveys. The incumbent will train subordinates to perform land survey duties, including operation of precision surveying instruments, proper surveying procedures, equipment maintenance, survey calculations and note keeping.
As a first‑line supervisor, the incumbent will also perform all required supervisor duties. Possession of a valid California Land Surveyor’s License is required, and the incumbent must maintain a valid Class C driver’s license to operate a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by the candidate’s score on the Transportation Surveyor Party Chief (Caltrans) exam. Candidates without current eligibility, such as those who are not listed on the state examination list, must obtain eligibility prior to application.
Minimum Qualifications- Valid California Land Surveyor License
- Valid Class C driver’s license
- Ability to operate state owned or leased vehicles
- Provide copy of California Land Surveyor License prior to hire.
- Maintain a valid and unrestricted driver’s license when operating state vehicles.
- Drive a vehicle to conduct normal work activities.
- Will be assigned work based on divisional and/or departmental needs.
