Current AssignmentSan Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is seeking a Senior Electronics & Communications Engineer to join our Electronics and Communications Engineering team. This advanced journey-level position offers an opportunity to apply deep technical expertise to the systems that keep BART's telephone, radio, public address system, and automated fare collection infrastructure running reliably for one of the busiest transit systems in the country.
In this role, the incumbent will perform advanced engineering work across the full project lifecycle, from design and development through modification, testing, and long-term maintenance of the District's electronics and communications equipment and systems including telephone, radio and automated fare collection systems.
Establishes schedules and methods for providing engineering and software support in assigned projects; monitors work progress of the contracted services; makes recommendations on resources to be allocated.
Provides engineering and software support to contracts and District engineering staff during the design review, testing and implementation of assigned electronics and communications projects.
Provides engineering and software support in assigned project area; ensures system compatibility; assists in developing and monitoring schedule; develops system software as required; integrates data into new systems.
Provides assistance in project contract administrations; reviews designs; coordinates installation and testing activities; reviews equipment interfaces to ensure that data interfaces are compatible.
Designs or modifies equipment; designs circuits and writes codes as required; builds and tests prototypes; prepares technical documentation on project activities.
Coordinates project activities with contractors; reviews contractor submittals for conformance to drawings and specifications; interprets plans and specifications to testing and installation staff; prepares and directs design contract revisions and change orders.
Assists in the development of policies and procedures; monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; implements approved policies and procedures.
As assigned, may participate in the selection of assigned staff; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures; trains assigned employees in their areas of work including electronics and communications engineering design methods, procedures and techniques.
Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of electronics and communications engineering.
The Most Qualified Candidates For This Position Will Have Highly Developed Competencies In The Following Areas, Which Will Be Reinforced With Related Work Experience And Will Be Articulated During The Selection Process
- Principles and practices of electronics and communications engineering, including electronic circuit design and performance
- Operational characteristics of voice/data systems, fare collection systems, and microprocessors
- Methods and techniques for troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment faults, including use of specialized test equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
- Developing, reviewing, and modifying complex electronics and communications engineering systems
- Preparing and reviewing technical specifications, drawings, and plans, including use of CADD or other specialized engineering design software
