Senior Electronics & Communications Engineer

Ride BART to a satisfying career that lets you both:
1) make a difference to Bay Area residents, and
2) enjoy excellent pay, benefits, and employment stability. BART is looking for people who like to be challenged, work in a fast-paced environment, and have a passion for connecting riders to work, school and other places they need to go. BART offers a competitive salary, comprehensive health benefits, paid time off, and the CalPERS retirement program.

San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is seeking a Senior Electronics & Communications Engineer to join our Electronics and Communications Engineering team. This advanced journey-level position offers an opportunity to apply deep technical expertise to the systems that keep BART's telephone, radio, public address system, and automated fare collection infrastructure running reliably for one of the busiest transit systems in the country.

In this role, the incumbent will perform advanced engineering work across the full project lifecycle, from design and development through modification, testing, and long-term maintenance of the District's electronics and communications equipment. This position will provide engineering and software support during design review, testing, and implementation of assigned projects, ensuring system compatibility as new technology is integrated into BART's existing infrastructure.

This position will also play a key role in contract administration: reviewing designs, coordinating installation and testing activities, evaluating contractor submittals for conformance to drawings and specifications, and directing design contract revisions and change orders.

Beyond hands-on engineering, this position carries real influence over how work gets done. It will help establish schedules and methods for engineering and software support on assigned projects, monitor contracted services, and make recommendations on resource allocation. In addition, it will design or modify equipment, design circuits, write code, build and test prototypes, and produce clear technical documentation. Senior engineers in this role often exercise lead supervision over junior staff, training them in engineering design methods and procedures, helping correct performance deficiencies, and contributing to hiring decisions, while also helping shape and refine the policies and standards that guide the broader team's work.

The most qualified candidates for this position will have highly developed competencies in the following areas, which will be reinforced with related work experience and will be articulated during the selection process:

  • Principles and practices of electronics and communications engineering, including electronic circuit design and performance
  • Operational characteristics of voice/data systems, fare collection systems, and microprocessors
  • Methods and techniques for troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment faults, including use of specialized test equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
  • Developing, reviewing, and modifying complex electronics and communications engineering systems
  • Preparing and reviewing technical specifications, drawings, and plans, including use of CADD or other specialized engineering design software
  • Computer programming languages relevant to assigned project areas
  • Project scheduling, budget administration, and contract administration principles and practices
  • Leading, organizing, and reviewing the work of lower-level engineering staff, including training and performance support
  • Analyzing complex engineering problems, evaluating alternatives, and recommending sound solutions
  • Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with District officials, contractors, and the public
