LHH Recruitment is working with a mission‑driven nonprofit organization who are committed to serving their community with integrity, transparency, and operational excellence. We are looking for a skilled Assistant Controller to join their finance team and support the organization’s continued growth.

Position Overview

The Assistant Controller will play a key role in managing the day‑to‑day accounting operations, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, supporting audit preparation, and maintaining strong internal controls. This position requires a hands‑on, detail‑oriented professional with nonprofit experience and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Manage daily accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, bank reconciliations, and month‑end close.
  • Support development of financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and grant reporting.
  • Assist with annual audits and preparation of audit schedules.
  • Oversee debt management tracking and reporting.
  • Partner with HR and payroll teams to ensure accurate, compliant payroll processing.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and process improvements.
  • Prepare advanced financial analyses using Excel; build and maintain complex spreadsheets.
  • Collaborate with program teams to ensure proper allocation of expenses across grants and programs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required).
  • Nonprofit accounting experience (required).
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting principles.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, modeling).
  • Experience with debt management and financial compliance.
  • Strategic understanding of payroll processes.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience with Yardi (Preferred but not required).
  • Familiarity with grants reporting, restricted funds, and audit preparation.
