Position: Director of Staff Development LVN Licensed Vocational Nurse

Under the direction and supervision of the Administrator and in consultation with the Director of Nursing, the Director of Staff Development (RN or LVN) oversees the planning, implementation, evaluation, and quality assurance of the facility’s educational programs for all employees. The role also encompasses infection control coordination, employee proficiency evaluations, and administrative record‑keeping.

Director of Staff Development Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse in the state of practice.
  • Minimum of two years experience supervising and providing nursing care in a long‑term care facility.
  • Completion of a 24‑hour continuing education course in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing educational programs.
  • Good mental and physical health.
  • Proficient written and oral communication in English.
General

Duties and Responsibilities:

Orientation
  • Coordinate theoretical and clinical orientation for all new employees.
  • Provide orientation documents supporting facility policies and procedures, maintaining them in individual employee file folders.
  • Ensure timely documentation of all History/Physicals and TB screenings within seven (7) days of employment.
  • Review the Blood Borne Pathogen policy and procedure with new hires.
Training
  • Coordinate and conduct an effective ongoing in‑service plan for all employees.
  • Deliver nursing reinforcement and training to meet the annual 24‑hour requirement for all nursing assistants.
  • Provide mandatory annual in‑services for all facility employees in accordance with state, federal regulations, and company policy.
  • Coordinate the yearly calendar and schedule, providing it to the administrator and department heads.
  • Schedule annual in‑service education for all personnel.
Staff Development and Supervision
  • Provide annual proficiency evaluations for nurse assistants, supervising their skills and procedures related to their duties.
  • Provide ongoing in‑services and supervision of infection control policies (standard precautions, hand washing, MRSA, VRE, isolation techniques).
  • Establish a monthly schedule and make daily assignments for all CNAs.
  • Ensure performance evaluations for all employees are completed three (3) months after employment and annually thereafter.
  • Interview and hire nursing assistants.
  • Maintain current employee files, including yearly physical and TB screenings, evaluations, CPR cards (if applicable), and valid licenses.
Administrative
  • Maintain all in‑service records in a neat, orderly fashion.
  • Attach lesson plan criteria for information presented.
  • Maintain individual educational profiles for all nursing assistants to ensure 24‑hour annual requirements are met.
  • Assist the Administrator and Director of Nursing Services in reinforcing nursing procedures and policies.
  • Monitor, support, teach, and supervise nursing staff on established clinical and theoretical procedures, including one‑on‑one teaching techniques as needed.
  • Make daily rounds to ensure residents are receiving appropriate nursing care.
  • Attend all meetings required by the Administrator.
  • Monitor completion of necessary sign‑in sheets and complete incident logs monthly.
  • Act as Safety Coordinator as directed by the Director of Nursing or Administrator.
  • Perform additional duties as may become necessary or be directed by senior management.
Consumer Service
  • Present a professional image to consumers through dress, behavior, and speech.
  • Adhere to company standards for resolving consumer concerns.
  • Ensure that all resident rights are protected.
