Under the supervision of the Unit Director and clinical leadership of the Emergency Department, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides nursing care to pediatric patients within a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. The LVN functions as a member of the multidisciplinary trauma and emergency care team and provides patient‑centered care within the scope of LVN practice under the direction of Registered Nurses and physicians.

The LVN supports the delivery of high‑quality emergency and trauma care for infants, children, adolescents, and their families. Responsibilities include assisting with triage preparation, patient intake, monitoring patient status, performing clinical procedures, administering medications within scope, preparing patients for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and supporting trauma resuscitation activities.

Care is delivered in a fast‑paced, high‑acuity environment and is tailored to the patient's physiological, psychological, and developmental needs. The LVN demonstrates strong clinical judgment, effective communication, and compassion while interacting with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

The LVN maintains professionalism while supporting diverse populations including patients, families, physicians, trauma teams, and hospital leadership in urgent and high‑stress clinical situations.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Patient Assessment and Intake
    • Performs patient intake and clinical assessment in the Emergency Department according to departmental protocols and trauma center standards.
    • Collects and documents patient history, vital signs, pain assessment, allergies, medications, and developmental considerations.
    • Identifies and reports significant clinical findings to the RN or physician promptly.
  • Emergency and Trauma Care Support
    • Assists the trauma team during trauma activations and emergency resuscitations.
    • Prepares trauma bays and ensures availability of emergency equipment and supplies.
    • Monitors patients for changes in condition and promptly reports deterioration to the clinical team.
  • Medication Administration
    • Administers medications and immunizations within LVN scope of practice and institutional policy.
    • Maintains accurate documentation of medication administration in the electronic health record.
    • Maintains knowledge of pediatric pharmacology and safe medication practices.
  • Clinical Procedures
    • Performs clinical procedures within scope including wound care and dressing changes, ear irrigation, specimen collection, IV assist, IV insertion, splinting support, phlebotomy.
    • Assists providers with emergency procedures and diagnostic testing.
  • Patient and Family Support
    • Provides age‑appropriate education and emotional support to pediatric patients and families.
    • Supports family‑centered care practices during emergency care situations.
  • Coordination of Care
    • Communicates patient status to the interdisciplinary team.
    • Assists with patient flow, transfers, and transport within the Emergency Department.
    • Documents patient care activities in the electronic health record (APEX).
  • Quality and Safety
    • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and trauma program standards.
    • Maintains compliance with infection control, patient safety, and regulatory requirements.
    • Ensures emergency equipment and supplies are maintained and ready for use.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited LPN or LVN program
  • Successful completion of an IV therapy course preferred
  • Two (2) years of related healthcare experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy
  • Demonstrated ability to provide highly personalized patient care
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an integral part of a patient care team
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to administer immunizations to patients
  • Ability to meet physical requirements identified below
  • Proficient in APEX
  • Demonstrated knowledge with Windows-based software including Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of Pediatric Experience
  • Emergency Department Experience
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Licensed as a Vocational Nurse in the State of California.
  • Current CPR Certification (BLS)
