Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee‑owned environmental consulting firm that plans, designs, permits, mitigates, and restores projects across communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands.
ESA is actively seeking On‑Call Archaeological Field Technicians in the Northern California area, including San Francisco, Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose, and Petaluma.
Who You Are- You are an effective team member experienced in archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring, surveys, and documentation of archaeological, and/or paleontological resources in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements. You live in Northern California or are willing to travel within the state and potentially to Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona.
- You hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology/paleontology or a related field and demonstrate the ability to use app‑based software for field recordation and mapping.
- You are familiar with working on active construction sites, completing DPR forms, are knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region, and have a minimum of six months of field experience or relative academic field experience in Northern California.
- You enjoy working outside, can walk long distances carrying up to 50 lbs. of gear in a wide variety of conditions, including strenuous natural habitats and difficult weather, and can work some nights and/or weekends.
- You possess a valid driver’s license and have experience driving 4‑wheel‑drive vehicles off‑road.
Variable part‑time archaeological field technicians will support field projects in Northern California. Successful candidates will perform all aspects of archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring and coordinate with construction personnel and Native American monitors.
- Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological and/or paleontological resources.
- Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel.
- Write and maintain written daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.

Pay Range$27.54 — $38.56 USD per hour (CA Pay Transparency Clause)
