Public Safety Supervisor

Overview

This position is under the direction of the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management and involves ensuring campus safety for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The Public Safety Supervisor applies crime risk and safety hazard prevention techniques, enforces university policies, monitors campus security, and may act as liaison between external law‑enforcement agencies and the campus community.

• Patrol campus grounds and facilities by vehicle, bike, and foot to ensure security.
• Assist in protecting life and property on campus.
• Examine doors, windows, gates, roadways, and lighting to ensure security.
• Investigate and submit reports concerning criminal offenses committed on campus.
• Maintain daily activity records, including communication logs and building checks.
• Monitor and report conditions that may create security or safety hazards.
• Monitor the camera system to prevent criminal activity.
• Coordinate with law enforcement, fire, or other public agencies as required.
• Assist public service representatives with emergency investigations.
• Enforce college and local laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations.
• Monitor campus traffic, answer calls, and dispatch information by radio to field patrol units.
• Provide information and directions to campus facilities and events.
• Issue citations for parking violations and provide crowd and traffic control for special events.
• Respond to complaints, assist parties to resolve issues, and perform access control duties.
• Respond to fire, smoke detector, and security alarms; provide safety escorts and first responder support for fires and first aid.
• Fill front desk assignments, answer calls for service, and handle lost and found property receipts.
• Supervise day‑to‑day activities of college security, schedule officers, and coordinate additional security for special events.
• Conduct shift meetings and review/update department policies and procedures.
• Provide subject‑matter expertise, assist in developing the department budget, and evaluate new equipment and supplies.
• Deliver employee training and monitor compliance with policies and regulations.
• Promote public safety programs, maintain internal and external relationships, and ensure documentation for tracking and review.
• Liaise with law enforcement staff regarding crime prevention measures.
• Attend meetings, prepare narrative and statistical reports, and submit to federal, state, and local agencies.
• Provide daily summary of incidents and activities to the Director.
• Analyze security activity data to determine patterns and effectiveness.
• Inspect and maintain physical safety concerns such as fire systems, lighting, fencing, and landscaping.
• Coordinate routine and emergency maintenance of vehicle fleet with automotive technician.
• Report scheduling adjustments to departing students due to unforeseen circumstances.

• Basic security principles and practice; public safety codes, policies, and regulations.
• Record‑keeping techniques and report‑writing requirements.
• Basic computer programs such as email and MS Office suite.

• Clery Act, TitleIX, and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
• Current public safety methods and procedures; criminal codes and laws.
• Safety policies, practices, and requirements of the department, including the Illness & Injury Prevention Plan.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Previous security or law‑enforcement supervisory experience required.
• Typically holds a Bachelor’s degree; knowledge and skills usually obtained through a Bachelor’s Degree.
• Valid California driver’s license with a safe driving record.
• BSIS Guard Card required.
• Pass P.O.S.T. PC832 training or designated equivalent within 6 months of hire.
• CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of hire.
• Pass comprehensive background check, drug screening, and psychological evaluation.
