Public Safety Supervisor

Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, the Public Safety Supervisor performs duties to ensure the safety and security on the campus for students, staff, faculty and visitors. Applies crime risk and safety hazard prevention techniques, methods, practices, and enforces University policies and procedures. Public Safety Supervisors monitor the security of the buildings and surrounding areas of the campus.

May serve as liaison between external law enforcement agencies and the campus community.

This position supports the Department of Public Safety mission to deliver excellent support and services to students, staff and faculty. Through its operational excellence, it advances the initiatives of the strategic plan, by ensuring goals are established, monitored and measured to meet the plan's timelines and objectives and help create a vibrant and welcoming campus life.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic security principles and practice, public safety codes, policies and regulations
  • Record keeping techniques and report writing requirements
  • Basic computer programs such as email, MS Office suite, etc.
  • Supervisory principles and practices
  • Clery Act, Title IX, and the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
  • Current public safety methods and procedures
  • Current criminal codes and laws, and effective investigative techniques and procedures.
  • Safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department, including the Illness & Injury Prevention Plan.

  • Previous Security or Law Enforcement Supervisory experience required
  • Knowledge and skills for this role typically obtained through a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license and safe driving record. Requires a BSIS Guard Card
  • Must successfully pass P.O.S.T. PC 832 training or designated equivalent within 6 months of hire
  • Must have CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of hire
  • Will be required to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screening, and psychological

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Patrols and secures campus grounds and facilities by vehicle, bike, and foot. Assists in the protection of life and property on campus. Examines doors, windows, gates, roadways, and lighting to ensure security.
  • Investigates and submits reports concerning criminal offenses committed on the campus. Prepares written reports as required. Completes and maintains records of daily activities including a Communication Log sheet with calls for service and building checks.
  • Monitors and reports on a continual basis all conditions which may create security or safety hazards on the College property. Monitors the camera system to ensure there is no criminal activity at other parts of the campus.
  • Contacts law enforcement, fire, or other public agencies as required. Assists public service representatives including fire, medical, and police with directions to emergency investigations.
  • Enforces College and local laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations according to established procedures.
  • Monitors incoming and outgoing campus traffic at the front gate location, answers incoming calls to campus security and dispatches information by radio to field patrol units. Provides information and directions to campus facilities, events, or other locations.
  • Monitors campus traffic and parking, issues citations for violations.
  • Provides crowd and traffic control for special events on and off campus.
  • Responds to complaints from the campus community and assists parties to resolve issues as appropriate. Respond and perform access control duties including securing and/or unlocking academic buildings for faculty, staff and students
  • Respond to fire, smoke detector, and security alarms. Provide safety escorts.
  • Fill front desk assignments. Answer calls for service.
  • Receive and fill out property receipts for lost and found items
  • May provide first responder support for fires and/or first aid needs.

Supervision:

  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of the College's security including community safety, parking enforcement, and escort services.
  • Assist in the scheduling of officers to ensure adequate shift coverage, vacation relief, and call-off replacement. Coordinates and schedules additional security at various special activities and events on campus.
  • Conducts shift meetings.
  • Participates in reviewing and updating the College's policies and procedures. Provides subject matter expertise to ensure they are accurate and enforceable.
