Job Description

TITLE: Skilled Laborer

REPORTS TO: Assigned Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Buildings and Grounds

CLASSIFICATION: Classified

FLSA: Non-Exempt

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair work on District facilities, grounds, building facilities, and equipment.

Representative Duties
  • Assist buildings and grounds personnel in the daily activities of the department and special projects.
  • Assist buildings and grounds trades in the repair or renovation of District buildings, facilities, and equipment.
  • Load and unload supplies; lift and move heavy objects; lift and carry stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, lumber, and other materials as directed.
  • Load and unload school and construction equipment such as scaffolding, portable stages, machinery, and furniture.
  • Drive a District vehicle to transport trash, dirt, building supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Assist in anchoring and securing computers, monitors, copiers, microwave ovens, refrigerators, other equipment, and machinery as required.
  • Assist in the repair of cafeteria tables, benches, service carts, and other related equipment.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Clean culverts, drains, and ditches and remove undergrowth.
  • Assist in swimming pool maintenance, as directed.
  • Change heating, ventilation, and air conditioner (HVAC) filters.
  • Work with all District employees, architecture and engineering employees, and outside contractors.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Training,

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to graduation from high school and two years experience in general construction, maintenance and repair work.

Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid California Driver’s License. Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures governing workscope; safety and health protection on the job (OSHA regulations); safe working methods and procedures; common tools, materials, equipment, and terminology used in the general maintenance trades.

Ability to: Properly use and operate tools and equipment common to the maintenance trade; interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing workscope; communicate effectively in English orally and in writing; understand and follow oral and written instructions; meet schedules and timelines; maintain routine records; complete work independently with minimal supervision; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; observe all legal and District defensive driving practices.

Working

Conditions

Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment; driving a District vehicle to conduct work; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors; seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; working around equipment having moving parts; working on ladders or scaffolding.

Physical Requirements: Dexterity of fingers and both arms and hands to ensure safety and successful completion of essential functions; lifting and handling small to large-sized materials, equipment or items; use of ladders and stairs; crawling; use of hand and power tools; repetitive use of upper extremities; and ability to carry out the required tasks.
