About the role
Everlaw is looking for a Staff/Principal AI Engineer to design and execute our overall technical strategy for applying AI in our product. AI is central to our offering, enabling us to solve complex litigation reasoning tasks at the scale of millions of documents and multimodal inputs. In this role you will lead a core squad of AI engineers, provide technical guidance to the broader engineering organization, and collaborate closely with senior leaders, including the Chief Technology Officer.
Responsibilities- Lead the design and implementation of Everlaw's technical AI strategy, staying on the cutting edge of frontier models and early access programs with major AI labs.
- Guide and empower engineers across the company in adopting AI solutions, sharing knowledge through code reviews, design documents, tech talks, and study groups.
- Collaborate with software engineers, security engineers, data scientists, product leads, designers, and cross‑functional teams to pursue AI as the leader in litigation technology.
- Identify new opportunities where advances in ML/AI translate to Legal Tech, influencing engineering and product direction.
- Help shape the overall approach to using AI at trillion‑token scale, including data storage, retrieval, and multimodal processing.
- At least 6 years of experience in ML/AI and 10+ years in software engineering.
- Demonstrated leadership on significant AI projects, including LLM deployment in production and NLP/text analysis.
- Strong programming skills in at least one scripting language, such as Python.
- Continuous learner with a deep understanding of current AI advancements and strategies for applying them.
- Excellent collaboration skills, able to explain complex concepts to non‑technical audiences.
- Willingness to mentor and elevate the AI expertise of teammates.
- Experience with retrieval‑based LMs or RAG for large custom data sets.
- Design knowledge of vector and graph databases for knowledge representation.
- Experience with multimodal approaches (image, audio, video).
- Built agents for task automation, including supervision, backtracking, exception handling, tool use, and multi‑step plans.
- Previous experience with SaaS and distributed systems.
- Salary range: $228,000 – $340,000, with final offer contingent on experience.
