Position SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Director of Government Auditing to lead and oversee complex audit engagements for government entities. This leadership role combines hands‑on technical audit expertise with strategic oversight, team leadership, and client advisory responsibilities.
The Director will ensure audit quality, regulatory compliance, and timely delivery while mentoring staff and strengthening client relationships. This opportunity is ideal for a CPA with strong Audit & Assurance (A&A) experience, financial statement expertise, and single audit knowledge within a public accounting environment.
Key Responsibilities- Lead financial statement audits for government entities from planning through issuance
- Oversee and review single audits in accordance with federal and state regulations
- Ensure compliance with professional standards and regulatory requirements
- Manage multiple audit engagements, timelines, and deliverables
- Serve as primary point of contact for government clients
- Provide technical guidance, review, and mentorship to audit teams
- Review financial statements, work papers, and audit documentation for quality and accuracy
- Collaborate with leadership to improve audit processes and efficiencies
- Support risk assessments and internal quality control standards
- Maintain strong client relationships and provide advisory support
- Stay current on governmental accounting standards and regulatory updates
- 6–8+ years of public accounting experience
- Strong Audit & Assurance (A&A) background
- Experience leading or reviewing governmental audits
- Experience with financial statement preparation and single audits
- Experience managing client engagements and audit teams
Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills - Ability to work hybrid in or near Oakland, MD
- Experience with government or municipal clients
- Familiarity with audit management software (e.g., CCH Pro System fx Engagement or similar)
- Experience mentoring and developing audit staff
- Process improvement or workflow optimization experience
Hybrid schedule with flexibility - Collaborative, client‑focused firm culture
- Seasonal audit cycle with ongoing professional development and CPE support
- Occasional onsite presence required
