Job Description:
The school nurse will plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate school health services within the context of the Coordinated School Health Program and Comprehensive Student Services Program Model.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Maryland RN License in good standing
- CPR/First Aid Certified
- Willing to serve as a Case Manager/Delegating Nurse to CMT's and other unlicensed staff in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and other pertinent sections of COMAR
- Serve as a Wellness Champion for your school
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including, but not limited to, the ability to interact successfully with diverse stakeholders (i.e., students, staff, administration, parents, general public, community agencies, etc.)
- Proficiency in a variety of technology and applications
- Successful management of confidential information and materials
- History of initiative, discretion, leadership, and independent judgment
- Demonstrated understanding of and attention to detail, especially as it relates to student safety and well-being
- History of professionalism and strong work ethic
- Ability to work independently and as a team player
- Ability to serve as a positive role model for students, staff, and other stakeholders
- Ability to maintain emotional control while addressing stressful situations
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs, stoop, bend, push, pull, and move objects
- Ability to lift and transport heavy to moderately heavy objects physical education-related materials
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment and provide subject-related demonstrations
- Regular and predictable attendance
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job either with or without reasonable accommodations
- Two (2) years RN experience with young children and adolescents
- Understanding and knowledge of the following in context of a school environment:
Pediatric/adolescent nursing - Public health/community health nursing
- Health counseling, including mental health and crisis intervention
- Communicable diseases
- Applicable laws, regulations and standards pertaining to school nursing practice (Maryland Nurse Practice Act, Standards of School Nursing Practice, and the Eight Components of a Coordinated School Health Program, FERPA, and HIPPA)
- School health law
- Special education and 504 legislation and services, particularly as related to the role of the school nurse
- Case finding, case management, and health advocacy
- Health room management, including personnel supervision of LPNs and CMTs Family theory, assessment, and intervention
- Networking and collaboration
- Ethnic and cultural sensitivity and competence
- Contemporary health and psychosocial issues that influence children, families, and the community
- Health care delivery systems and the concepts of the primary health care
- Building student, staff and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self advocacy, and learning
- School as a non-traditional healthcare setting
- Environmental health within the school community Familiar with electronic health records

The school nurse will:
- Plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate school health services within the context of the Coordinated School Health Program Model.
- Collaborate with the school-based Pupil Services Team to identify and provide for student health care needs as part of comprehensive Student Services case management. Make appropriate, independent, and timely nursing decisions.
- Administer medications and provide appropriate services in accordance with students' needs.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the school, applicable programs and agencies, law, Board Policy, and Administrative Procedure.
- Collect data to direct evidence-based practice.
- Interpret and explain records, reports, activities, healthcare plans, accommodations, and medical interventions.
- Identify health-related barriers to student learning (i.e., at-risk behaviors, financial, cultural, economic, etc.).
- Maximize in-class time by reducing the incidence of health-related absenteeism.
