About Flying Scot

Flying Scot, Inc. is a small sailboat manufacturer located in Deer Park, Maryland, near Deep Creek Lake. For nearly 70 years, we have built the Flying Scot—a 19-foot sailboat known for its durability, versatility, and active sailing community.

Our boats are built by hand by a close-knit team. Each employee plays an important role in the process and has the opportunity to see a boat progress from raw materials through final assembly.

We are looking for a dependable, motivated person to join our team as a Shop Assistant / Boat Builder. This position involves several stages of boat production, with a strong emphasis on fiberglass construction and resin layup.

Position Overview

The Shop Assistant / Boat Builder will help manufacture fiberglass sailboats and related components. A significant portion of the job involves working directly with fiberglass, resin, molds, tools, and unfinished boat parts.

This is an active, physical position. Candidates should be comfortable working on their feet, using hand and power tools, lifting materials, and completing detailed production tasks. The work can sometimes be messy, hot, and physically demanding, but it offers the satisfaction of helping build a high-quality finished boat by hand.

Previous boat-building or fiberglass experience is helpful but not required. We are willing to train someone who is reliable, mechanically inclined, attentive, and eager to learn.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assisting with fiberglass layup for hulls, decks, and other boat components
  • Measuring, cutting, positioning, and applying fiberglass materials
  • Mixing and applying resin according to established procedures
  • Preparing molds, tools, and materials before production begins
  • Rolling and consolidating fiberglass to remove trapped air and ensure proper saturation
  • Trimming, drilling, sanding, grinding, and finishing fiberglass components
  • Reading tape measures and transferring measurements accurately
  • Using common hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Assisting with fitting, assembling, and installing boat components
  • Moving molds, hulls, decks, materials, and equipment safely
  • Inspecting work and reporting defects or inconsistencies
  • Cleaning and organizing tools, molds, materials, and work areas
  • Following shop procedures, production standards, and safety requirements
  • Assisting with other assembly, maintenance, and general shop tasks as needed

Because Flying Scot is a small company, employees may work in several areas of production. The ideal candidate will be flexible and willing to help wherever needed.

What We Are Looking For A successful candidate will:
  • Enjoy working with their hands and building physical products
  • Be comfortable with active, hands-on work
  • Follow verbal and written directions carefully
  • Read a tape measure accurately
  • Have experience using common hand and power tools
  • Pay attention to detail and take pride in producing quality work
  • Think ahead and prepare for upcoming steps in the production process
  • Recognize when tools, materials, or supplies need to be prepared or replenished
  • Ask questions when unsure instead of guessing
  • Be dependable, punctual, and ready to work
  • Accept feedback and use it to improve
  • Work effectively as part of a small team
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Be willing to learn new skills and take on additional responsibility
Preferred Experience Experience in any of the following areas would be beneficial but is not required:
  • Fiberglass layup or composite manufacturing
  • Boat building or boat repair
  • Automotive bodywork
  • Gelcoat, resin, or composite repair
  • Carpentry or woodworking
  • Construction, fabrication, or manufacturing
  • Mechanical assembly
  • Sanding, grinding, drilling, or finishing
  • Reading basic drawings or work instructions

We are especially interested in candidates with strong mechanical aptitude, even if their experience comes from a different trade or industry.

Physical and Work-Environment Requirements This position requires the ability to:
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Stand and walk for extended periods
  • Bend, reach, kneel, crouch, and work in various positions
