Position: House Supervisor - RN (Relief)

Registered Nurse Position

Responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through the effective management and utilization of resources (staff and supplies) on all patient care units and for patient populations with diverse needs related to their illness, injury, age, developmental stage, or cultural background.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  • Current license to practice Registered Professional Nursing in West Virginia.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date

Experience:

  • Five (5) years' nursing experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
Preferred Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  • Specialty certification in nursing administration or specialty.

Core

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Using available data, make appropriate administrative decisions regarding complex, predictable and unpredictable situations affecting the hospital, such as public relations, patient care, medical-legal, financial issues, bed coordination, etc. Validate decisions, when necessary, with the House Supervisor.
  • Initiates appropriate actions in emergency situations such as: power failure, disaster, fires, etc. Keeps House Supervisor informed of status.
  • Manages public relations matters regarding media inquiries concerning patients and unusual events.
  • Assists staff in nursing and other departments to resolve problems that impact the delivery of patient care. Collaborates with the department director as necessary. Keeps management informed regarding the situation and its outcomes as appropriate.
  • Consistently provides current bed status of all units and patients to the Emergency Department physician, Med-Com, and MARS so that patients can be accepted for transfer as expeditiously as possible.
  • Assessment of bed availability and/or direct admissions to determine transfer status, Coordinates transfers from outside facilities and Emergency Department using clinical expertise for patient placement.
  • Assesses the unit's activity level during rounds. Confers with the unit Charge Nurse regarding unusual patient care situations or other concerns voiced.
  • Assists the Charge Nurse in resolving complex problems related to staff performance, inappropriate behaviors or other problems involving patients, visitors, or staff.
  • Receives report defining the unit activities that may impact house wide staffing needs and makes preliminary staffing plans as appropriate.
  • Assigns Resource Pool and Per Diem staff to best meet staffing needs.
  • Assists the Manager or designee in arranging appropriate staffing, such as calling in additional unit staff or enforcing Staffing Adjustment Guidelines. Assesses the need for re-assignment of staff and makes those re-assignments.
  • Collaborates with operational support departments (housekeeping, transport, etc.) to maximize patient throughput.
  • Displays expertise when assisting with clinical nursing issues and consults with other professionals as the need arises.
  • Negotiates decisions with physician, visitors, staff and others in a professional manner that staff can emulate.
  • Conducts patient rounding and facilitates service recovery in a timely manner.
  • Responds to emergency pages, assesses the need for additional help, coordinates plan for patient transfer, if necessary, and ensures family support.
  • Works in conjunction with House Supervisor to complete fitness for duty requirements.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement/Quality Improvement activities as appropriate.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be self-motivated.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to wear latex or vinyl gloves, with frequent changes and hand washing.
  • Must meet Department of Labor's MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).
  • Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift.
  • Able to ambulate, position, turn and pull up self-assisting adult patients.

Working Environment:

  • May be exposed to virus, disease, and infection from patients and specimens in working environment.
  • May be exposed to traumatic situations including psychiatric crisis, physical injuries and death.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse and be able to use and apply hospital software programs.
  • Answer telephones and transcribe messages and use patient call system.
  • Must have or acquire the ability to operate patient care equipment (May Include: but not limited to :scales, lifting devices, blood pressure monitor, thermometer and glucometer.
  • Communicate verbally, written and electronically with healthcare personnel, families and patients.
  • Strong leadership and decision making ability.
  • Ability to de-escalate situations.
  • Must be proficient in IV skills
