The West Virginia University Health System is the state’s largest health system and largest private employer. Position SummaryThe Advance Practice Professional (APP) is an individual with advanced clinical-surgical urology expertise. The APP evaluates and coordinates comprehensive care for surgical urology patients and their families, from pre‑operative assessment through discharge and outpatient follow‑up. The APP collaborates with clinical and faculty teams, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, educates trainees, and participates in all aspects of global patient management within the system.
CoreDuties and Responsibilities
- Manages individualized care for surgical urology patients in inpatient, immediate post‑discharge, and ambulatory settings.
- Completes daily rounds, pre‑procedure evaluations, and integrated assessments.
- Participates in peri‑operative management, including first assisting in the operative suite.
- Orders additional tests or consults based on clinical guidelines and patient needs.
- Performs diagnostic tests and communicates results in accordance with scope of practice.
- Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
- Documents comprehensive evaluations and clinical findings in the medical record.
- Facilitates discharge and follow‑up coordination, ensuring appropriate services and tests.
- Performs procedures following established clinical guidelines and protocols for urological surgery.
- Develops individualized plans of care, including teaching and referral to other team members.
- Participates in physician rounds and consultations as needed.
- Identifies unstable or complex patient scenarios and initiates appropriate interventions.
- Assists in collecting outcome measures during clinic visits.
- Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
- Evaluates teaching effectiveness and collaborates with nursing and clinical staff to improve education plans.
- Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision‑making.
- Uses equipment safely and follows scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Applies teaching/learning theory and appropriate strategies to educate staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promotes a learning environment responsive to patient/family preferences and readiness.
- Updates knowledge base throughout the year and completes required clinical competencies.
- Serves as a resource person and provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel.
- Mentors nursing personnel across all levels of clinical practice.
- Participates in community programs and literature distribution in the area of expertise.
- Communicates effectively with all stakeholders to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Documents plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly in the patient’s record.
- Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve patient‑outcome improvements.
- Provides leadership in developing and implementing changes that positively impact surgical urology practice.
- Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to support creative problem‑solving.
- Participates in inter‑disciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Promotes innovation of the APP role across inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Serves on committees and task forces, documents hours, and submits billing reports when appropriate.
- Participates in WVUM/UHA Performance Improvement Plan and applies findings to change practice.
- Reviews and interprets urology data from registries, reports, and studies, recommending changes as necessary.
- Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assists faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
