Special Education Teacher Self-Contained – Elementary School

Fayette County Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher to join our school system. The successful candidate will be expected to perform duties customary to an elementary school teacher, including preparing lessons toward mastery of the state standards, collaborating with other faculty, teaching small groups, differentiating instruction, providing interventions, working with administrators and coaches to improve performance, monitoring students, and collaborating with parents and stakeholders.

Developing and administering assessments is also required as is instructing students in accordance with their IEPs and holding IEP meetings.

An active Tennessee teaching license is required for this Special Education position with the proper endorsements for a Junior High School Self-Contained classroom.

Job Goal

The responsibilities of a special education educator are: creating lesson plans, instructing students according to the state standards and in conjunction with their IEPs, collaborating with teachers, staff, and administration, identifying and instructing high‑ability students in the five areas of intellectual ability, specific academic focus, creativity, the arts, and leadership, and monitoring student progress.

Qualifications

  • Hold appropriate Tennessee certification license for Special Education – Self-Contained classroom

Performance Responsibilities

Job Description:

Gifted Teacher

  • Provide an instructional program that is differentiated and challenging.
  • Commitment to high student achievement & support for all students.
  • Develop and implement consistent special education programming at the district level.
  • Ability to exercise various teaching strategies to increase students’ critical thinking skills.
  • Create a secure climate and respond to inquiries from a variety of sources.
  • Instruct students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study.
  • Administer and develop subject‑specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Prepare a variety of written materials to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
  • Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Assist classroom teachers to provide instruction to high achievers.
  • Use available technology in your lessons.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the administration.
Working Environment

This job is performed in a standard office environment and in a generally clean and healthy environment. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing. Physical requirements include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
