Media Producer – On Call (Technical Producer)
This role produces live and recorded video content for linear television, FAST channels, web, app, and social. The position combines the traditional responsibilities of a control‑room technical director and producer, requiring the operation of control‑room equipment and coordination with meteorology editors and video meteorologists.
Location: Oakville, ON (on‑call, on‑site)
Salary: CA $50,000 – CA $60,000 Employment type: Full‑time
This is an on‑call position with no guaranteed hours. Staff are called in to fill shifts for vacations, sick days, holidays, or unplanned events.
Day to Day Responsibilities- Produce and direct daily weather‑related video content for linear television, FAST channels, web, app, social, and sponsor ships.
- Own the planning of content for scheduled day parts and ensure high standards are met for all video content produced through the control room.
- Coordinate with a team of video meteorologists and/or in‑studio content creators to schedule live and record times for various weather segments.
- Attend the daily team meetings most relevant to shift.
- Coach and direct on‑air presenters during live/live‑stream and recorded segments.
- Continuously monitor information sources and weather data to ensure the accurate, credible, and timely presentation of video content.
- Operate all equipment necessary to produce live/recorded segments, including audio boards, cameras, graphics, Ross Overdrive system, Baron, etc.
- Communicate daily with the Master Control Operator to confirm grids, block times, necessary changes, sponsored items, and quality control of content sent from the control room.
- Coordinate regularly with the Operations Manager to identify technical problems, issues, and solutions that improve the MP’s duties.
- Monitor emerging technologies and trends and investigate ways to incorporate them into our TV and digital properties.
- Provide extra work during active weather when required.
- Provide handovers to the MP on the following shift & TV/TV Apps Lead, documenting any technical problems, content used, and updates needed.
- Work in conjunction with the Lead to conduct regular air checks.
- Participate in monthly and/or bi‑weekly Media Producer meetings.
- College certificate or university degree in Communications, Journalism, or Television Production.
- Minimum three years of experience as a television technical director (television news preferred).
- Experience as a television or content producer.
- Excellent editorial judgment.
- Good knowledge of North American geography, meteorology, and current affairs.
- Team leader.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Organized and meticulous about details.
- Technical skills required (equipment operation) and interest in weather.
- Ability to work shifts in a 24/7 environment.
