Job Description

The People and Culture Business Partner plays an integral role in both the operational and strategic activities of People and Culture across multiple program areas and sites. The incumbent in this role is a well-versed seasoned Human Resources Professional with a strong ability to motivate, inspire and persuade the organization and is relied upon for HR knowledge and expertise at all levels of the organization, including providing support and advice to managers and employees on P&C programs and policies, acting as a liaison between the Union and the Employer in the areas of Employee Relations, Labour Relations and Health and Safety, as well as in leading and coordinating P&C initiatives.

Salary range: $80,000 CAD - $90,000 CAD annually. Compensation is negotiable and will be determined based on the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications.

Areas of Direct Responsibilities
  • Customer service support to operations supervisors / managers to tailor services based on developing a full understanding of the client’s needs.
  • Utilizing a consultative approach and broad human resources generalist knowledge, work directly with assigned client group(s) to provide an experienced level of counsel, expert advice, coaching and leadership.
  • Advise on and support the union and non union compensation plan(s) for assigned client group(s) including performing job evaluations when required.
  • For assigned client group(s), act as the main point of contact to support with labour and employee relations matters, adhering to related legislation and multiple Collective Agreements.
  • Work in collaboration with operations supervisor/managers, to resolve employee and labour relations matters including performance management, progressive discipline and termination, leave and accommodation management, grievance management and resolution as required.
  • Draft discipline and termination letters. Participate in the discipline and termination discussions between the manager and employee. Review past cases both internally and externally for best practices.
  • Lead or co-lead workplace investigations (as appropriate) to provide conflict resolution including claims to harassment and discrimination.
  • Oversee the management of ESA leaves of absence for assigned client groups (e.g. pregnancy/ parental leave) ensuring supporting documents are submitted to substantiate leave requests, drafting and issuing leave letters, tracking leaves, liaising with employees and supervisor regarding status updates.
  • Manage and participate in the grievance process up to and including arbitration, as well as participate in Collective Bargaining.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with relevant Health & Safety legislation.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of People and Culture policies, procedures and programs.
  • Lead the communication and implementation of People and Culture programs to assigned client group(s), including preparing and delivering presentations and/or written communications to clients, as we as addressing questions and concerns.
  • Prepare reports, presentations and other education material related to key workplace relations issues to support organization continuous learning.
  • Lead, organize and coordinate ad hoc P&C projects to contribute to the continuous improvement of organizational performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management or related discipline.
  • CHRP or CHRL designation or in process an asset.
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of HR generalist working experience with a proven expertise of employee and labour relations.
  • Working experience in a unionized environment; must be able to advise on interpretation and administration of multiple collective agreements and participate and manage through grievances.
  • Experience in workplace Health & Safety including WSIB claims management.

  • Expert knowledge of HR legislation including but not limited to, the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, OSHA, Labour Relations Act, etc.
