Job Details: Temporary Full Time (CUPE 136T)

Posting Status: Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants.

Duration: One contract lasting up to eight months, commencing in March and ending in November.

Internal secondment applications are welcome. Please note, however, that members of management will not be considered for secondments into bargaining unit positions.

Temporary Rate: $32.60
Full Time Rate: $33.20

This position reports to the Harbour Supervisor and will be under the daily direction of the Harbour Coordinator. The Harbour Technician/Sanitation Labourer position works principally in the operation, maintenance and repair of the Town’s Harbour assets and facilities. The functions performed in this position are in accordance with established procedures and practices.

Job Responsibilities:

  • May be required to supervise part‑time staff and instruct all support staff in the safe and efficient use, care and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Installation, assembly, and dismantling of harbours and docks.
  • Inspect, build, and maintain floating docks, boat cradles, related hardware, water lines, and other assets.
  • Perform boat operations including launching, hauling, and towing; power boat blocking; mast rigging and de‑masting of sail boats.
  • Assist boat owners in identifying dangerous and hazardous boat equipment.
  • Record and track all daily activities and repairs made, perform dock and anchor chain inspections as per maintenance schedule.
  • Maintain daily electronic records of work‑related activities, work orders, emails and forecasted work.
  • Operate motorboats, ratchets, chainsaws, pumps, bolt cutters, air compressors to repair docks, transport materials to work site, pulling and lifting anchor chains.
  • Operate travel lifts to fifty tons, boom trucks with 8‑ton ratings, forklifts, tractors, front‑end loaders, all‑terrain vehicles, hydraulic trailers, and small equipment, including all auxiliary attachments.
  • Conduct all necessary maintenance and adjustments, keeping the equipment in safe, clean, and tidy condition, making daily circle checks and reporting defects and, if necessary, small repairs in a prescribed manner.
  • Assume accountability for resource loss, mishandling.
  • Dismantle docks and harbour equipment for winter seasons.
  • Routinely maintain and service power tools, including lubricating, cleaning filters, chainsaws, and small hand tools.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed manner.
  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and security in the harbour areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of previous related experience in boating, harbours, and marina operation.
  • Must possess mobile crane certification (0-8 ton), forklift certification (all terrain), rigging and hitching certification, aerial lift certification.
  • Must hold and provide a copy of a valid SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency) card.
  • Previous experience in the operation of travel lifts to 50 tons, boom trucks with 8‑ton ratings, forklifts, tractors, front‑end loaders, all‑terrain vehicles, and small equipment, including all auxiliary attachments in a safe and efficient manner with thorough knowledge of all maintenance aspects of the equipment and their attachments is also required.
  • Knowledge of boat operations including mast stepping, mast unstepping, securing vessels for storage, towing, slinging boats for haul‑out and launching.
  • Excellent customer service and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficient time management skills and demonstrated flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to work as part of a team.
  • Canadian Power and Sail Squadron certification would be considered an asset.
