Area Coordinator for Residential Programs
The Office of Residence Life at Oberlin College and Conservatory invites applications for the Area Coordinator position. This is a Full‑time (40 hours a week), 12‑month, live‑in Administrative and Professional Staff position reporting to the Director of Residential Engagement in the Office of Residence Life.
Oberlin College is unique among independent colleges in its commitment to offering students a wide variety of on‑campus housing options, such as special interest theme housing, cooperative housing, Village Apartment housing, and traditional housing. Residential living and dining are integral to the educational experience of Oberlin students; more than 90% of Oberlin’s students live and dine on campus during their entire 4 to 5 years as undergraduates.
The Area Coordinator joins a management team under the leadership of the Assistant Vice President/Dean of Residence Life and Auxiliary Services that includes the Director of Residential Engagement, Director of Residential Housing Operations, Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities, and Director of Conferences and Residential Services.
The Area Coordinator is responsible for supporting the programmatic and social aspects within the assigned communities with administrative support from four Assistant Directors. The Area Coordinator will manage all student staff on‑call operations within their assigned duty zone and will work to help support management responsibilities in buildings within their assigned communities. This position supports the implementation of the Residential Curriculum for students living in the assigned communities.
ResponsibilitiesAdministration, Supervision, and Advising
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate a team of 25‑30 Student Staff Members, facilitating biweekly/monthly 1:1 meetings with each individual
- Oversee and support a community of approximately 800‑1,000 residents, collaborating with Assistant Directors to triage student needs and concerns
- Assist with student and professional staff hiring
- Participate in regular meetings within the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs
- Assist with the check‑in, check‑out, room inspections, and damage billing processes at the open and close of each semester
- Support Student Staff Members in creating engaged communities that support student development as outlined by the Office of Residence Life
Program Implementation and Community Development
- Assist with the development and implementation of residential programs in coordination with various departments on campus
- Demonstrate leadership by working with residents, faculty, and staff to develop a space for students to be successful in their personal, academic, and professional pursuits
- Empower residents to create and shape vibrant communities in each residential space
- Remain active and visible within assigned communities
- Support ongoing assessment efforts concerning students and their experience at Oberlin College
Advising, Counseling, and Crisis Management
- Support students around social, academic, and personal concerns
- Be knowledgeable of college resources and provide appropriate referrals
- Serve in the campus‑wide on‑call system rotation, responding to crisis situations remotely as appropriate/required
- Serve as a conduct hearing officer, educating residents about residence life and college policies
Facility Standards and Safety
- Monitor the physical integrity of assigned spaces through weekly walkthroughs and report and follow‑up on maintenance concerns
- Oversee life safety inspections and complete necessary follow‑up meetings
Due to evening and weekend work requirements, this position allows a flexible work schedule in collaboration with Central Office staff. The duties of the Area Coordinator will shift during the summer to assist with office needs related to Conference Services, Housing Selection, and Training. This list is not all‑inclusive and all employees are expected to perform other duties as assigned.
Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree completed with preference given to a person enrolled in a master’s degree within student personnel or another student‑focused field.
