    • Food Justice Assistants will help build access to healthy foods in Oberlin and southern Lorain County, helping harvest and transport donated farm produce, assisting with OCS’s weekly food distributions and pop‑up produce pantries, and conducting research and community outreach. What coursework have you completed that helps prepare you for this position? What relevant work, volunteer, or personal experience would you bring to the position?
    • The position will involve working with OCS staff and volunteers, local growers, OCS clients, and other community members. Food Justice Assistants will need to be comfortable working closely with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Please give an example of a time you worked with someone from a different background from you, or a time that a work or volunteer experience took you outside of your comfort zone.

  • These positions are open to currently enrolled Oberlin College students studying on campus. Preference will be given to students able to work in both fall 2025 and spring 2026.

    As a Food Justice Assistant, you will work with the food programs team at the social services organization Oberlin Community Services (OCS) to build access to healthy food and produce for the residents of southern Lorain County. This will involve working on OCS’s Farm Food Rescue gleaning program and maintaining sustainable food system projects. You may also work at OCS food distributions, with opportunities to learn more about food justice, sustainability, and community‑oriented work.

    Responsibilities
    • Outreach to local farmers
    • Harvesting and picking up produce farmers agree to donate to our food pantry
    • Transporting, cleaning/packaging and distributing gleaned produce through our food distributions
    • Outreach and education in the community
    • Outreach to local restaurants, grocery stores, and places with dining halls to solicit donations
    • Assist with weekly food distributions and pantry management
    • Assist local community farmers
    • Create written and visual communications content
    • Collaborate with Food Programs staff to maintain and expand Food Rescue initiatives
    • Learn about non‑profit management, casework, volunteer coordination, donor relations, and more.
    Qualifications
    • Commitment to social justice and working with low‑income individuals
    • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to pass Oberlin MVR Driving Background Check
    • Able to commit approximately 10 hours per week (you get to set your own schedule!)
    • Comfortable with physical labor/able to lift up to 50 pounds
    • Proficiency or fluency in Spanish preferred

    $14.00 per hour for up to 10 hours per week per assistant during the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters (2 positions available). Assistants will record their hours as student employees in Oberlin’s Time Clock Plus system.
